لا يَمْنَعَنَّكَ مِنْ بُغاء

الخير تَعقادُ التمائمْ

Let not the tying of amulets bar you from seeking good,

Nor let sneezing, nor the flight of birds over you avail.

ولا التشاؤمُ بالعطاسِ

ولا التيمُّن بالمقاسمْ

Truly, I have ceased going forth early in the day against ill-omened days;

For days of ill-omen are like days of good-omen, and days like omens.

ولقد غدوت وكنت لا

أغدو على واقٍ وحاتِمْ

Thus there is neither lasting good nor evil for anyone.

That is inscribed on ancient heavenly tablets.

فإذا الأشائِمُ كالأيا

م والأيام كالأشائِمْ

وكذاكَ لا خيرٌ ولا

شرٌّ على أحد بدائِمْ

قد خُطّ ذلك في الزُّبو

رِ الأوَّلِيَّاتِ القَدائِمْ
