الزِّقُ مُلْكٌ لمن كان له
والمُلْكُ منه طويل وقَصيرْ
Glory belongs to him who owns it
And kingship from him is long and short
منها الصَّبوحُ الذي يترُكني
ليثَ عِفرِّين والمالُ كثِيرْ
Of it is the dawn which leaves me
A roaring lion and much wealth
فأوَّلُ الليلِ لَيْثٌ خادِرٌ
وآخِرُ الليلِ ضِبْعانٌ عَثُورْ
So the first of the night is a sleepy lion
And the last of the night is a clumsy hyena
قاتَلَكِ اللّه من مشروبةٍ
لو أنّ ذا مرَّةٍ عنكِ صَبُورْ
May God destroy you, o drinking cup
If only you could once refrain from me
