1. وَقُوريحٍ عَتَدٍ أُعِدَّ لِنيِّهِ

    لَبنُ اللُقوحِ فَعادَ مِلءَ حِزامِه

    With a grave, dignified air, he prepared his traveling provisions—

    The milk of the oleaster filled his waterskin.

  2. وَهبَ الوَليدُ بِسَرجِها وَلِجامِها

    وَكَذاكَ ذاكَ بِسَرجِه وَلِجامِهِ

    Al-Walid offered him the horse's saddle and bridle,

    And likewise the other his saddle and bridle.

  3. أَهدى المُقَنَّعُ لِلوَليدِ قَصيدَةً

    كَالسَيفِ أُرهِفُ حدُّهُ بِحُسامِهِ

    Al-Muqanna' gifted al-Walid a poem

    Keen-edged like a sword in its eloquence.

  4. وَلَهُ المَآثِرُ في قُريشٍ كُلِّها

    وَلهُ الخِلافَةُ بَعد مَوت هِشامِهِ

    He has glorious deeds among all Quraysh

    And the caliphate after Hisham's death.
