1. إذا ما طافَ بالشُّرفةِ

    ضوءُ القمر المضْنَى

    When moonlight floods the balcony

    And bathes you in its glow

  2. ورفَّ عليكِ مثلَ الحُلـ

    ـمِ أو إشراقةِ المعنَى

    Like a dream or insight’s radiance,

    As you lie on your bed of dew,

  3. وأنتِ، على فراش الطُّهـ

    ـرِ، كَالزَّنبقة الوَسْنَى

    Like a slender lily,

    Draw your naked body close

  4. فضمِّي جسمَك العاري

    وصوني ذلك الحُسْنا

    And spare me that beauty.

    I envy any watcher

  5. أغارُ عليكِ من سابٍ

    كأنَّ لضوئِه لَحْنَا

    As if his light were a song

    That makes hearts quiver with longing when it croons.

  6. تدقُّ له قلوبُ الحو

    رِ أشواقًا إذا غنَّى

    Smooth to the touch, a young gazelle

    Smitten with any beauty,

  7. رقيقُ اللمس، عربيدٌ

    بكلِّ مليحةٍ يُعْنَى

    Bold enough, if passion calls, to storm a fortress!

    He slid down from behind a cloud when he saw you, and hesitated,

  8. جريءٌ، إنْ دعاه الشو

    قُ، أن يقْتحم الحصنَا!

    Then softly tread the earth,

    Ripping through its gardens.

  9. تحدَّرَ من وراءِ الغيـ

    ـمِ، حين رآك، واستأْنَى

    I marveled at him—how did he seize the corner?

    How did he penetrate the thorns, scale the branch?

  10. ومسَّ الأرضَ في رفقٍ

    يشُقُّ رياضها الغَنَّا

    Your cheeks hold the wine of youth

    That he poured out nearby.

  11. عجبتُ لهُ، وما أعجـ

    ـبُ كيفَ استلَمَ الرُّكْنَا؟

    An eternal balm flows from the vine of temptation

    Into your breasts, two spells

  12. وكيفَ تَسَوَّرَ الشَّوْكُ؟

    وكيفَ تسلَّقَ الغُصْنَا؟

    That captivated me.

    He probed their treasure trove

  13. على خديكِ خمرُ صبا

    بةٍ أفرغها دَنَّا

    And plotted to storm the fort.

    I envy, I envy if he kissed that mouth

  14. رحيقٌ من جَنَى الفتنـ

    ـةِ لا ينضُبُ أو يفْنَى

    Or curled round your tender form!

    For his light has a heart

  15. وفي نهديكِ طلَّسما

    نِ في حَلِّهما افتنَّا

    And his sorcery has an eye

    That ensnares the innocent wave in her depths!

  16. إلى كنزهما المعبو

    دِ باتَ يعالجُ الرُّدْنَا

    How many nights, when longing called

    And he drew near,

  17. أغارُ، أغارُ إنْ قَبـ

    ـلَ هذا الثغرَ أو ثنَّى

    The tyrant abased himself before you

    Like a child complaining of deprivation?

  18. ولفَّ النَّهْدَ في لينٍ

    وضمَّ الجسدَ اللَّدْنَا

    He wanted, but gained no kiss.

    He hoped, but held no embrace.

  19. فإنَّ لضوئِهِ قلبًا

    وإنَّ لسحرِهِ جَفْنَا

    Your arm encircled him lightly

    While you made him nothing!

  20. يصيدُ الموجةَ العذرا

    ءَ من أغوارها وَهْنَا!

    You disobeyed his passion so he turned angry,

    As if he held a demon in his chest.

  21. وكم من ليلةٍ لمَّا

    دعاهُ الشوقُ واستدْنَى

    He left with the drunken glance,

    Crossing plain and sorrow.

  22. جثا الجبَّارُ بين يديـ

    ـكِ طفلًا يشتكي الغَبْنَا

    He stirred the night to hatred

    And clenched his chest in rage.

  23. أرادَ، فلم يَنَل ثغرًا

    ورامَ، فلم يصب حضْنَا

    The child returned a tyrant

    Shaking the universe!

  24. حَوَتْكِ ذراعهُ رسمًا

    وأنتِ حويتِهِ فنَّا!

    So bolt the crimson balcony

    Away from the shameful nest.

  25. عصيتِ هواهُ فاستضرى

    كأنَّ بصدرِهِ جِنَّا

    Spare me your beauty from the chaos

    Of this passionate, obsessed lover,

  26. مضى بالنظرةِ الرَّعنا

    ءِ يطوي السَّهْلَ والحَزْنَا

    Lest people think your boudoir

    Hides some scandal!

  27. يثيرُ الليلَ أحقادًا

    وصدرَ سحابِهِ ضِغْنَا

    How you have disturbed so many nights!

    How many moons you have eclipsed!

  28. وعادَ الطفلُ جَبَّارًا

    يهزُّ صراعهُ الكوْنَا!

  29. فَرُدِّي الشرفةَ الحمرا

    ءَ دونَ المخدَع الأسْنَى

  30. وصوني الحسنَ من ثور

    ةِ هذا العاشق المُضْنَى

  31. مخافةَ أنْ يظنَّ النَّا

    سُ في مخدعك الظنَّا

  32. فكم أقلقتِ من ليلٍ!

    وكم من قَمَرٍ جُنَّا!
