1. ربَّتي، رَبَّةُ أشعا

    ري، وحُبِّي، وغنائي

    My lady, mistress of poets,

    My joy, my love, my muse

  2. هي حوريَّةُ غابٍ

    لم تَبِنْ للشعراءِ

    She is an absent nymph

    Who revealed not to the poets

  3. وعروسٌ من بنات الـ

    ـجنِّ لم تَبْدُ لرائي

    A bride of celestial maidens

    Who showed not to the seers

  4. مثلَها لم يَرَ صَيَّا

    دٌ على صفحةِ ماءِ

    None like her was seen

    On the page of water

  5. فِتنةُ الشاعر في وحـ

    ـدتِهِ كلَّ مساءِ

    The poet's passion in his solitude

    Every evening

  6. غَنَّتِ الأحلامُ في غر

    فتِهِ لحنَ اللِّقاءِ

    Dreams sang in her room

    The melody of meeting

  7. وسَرَتْ تَرْقُصُ حَوْلَيـ

    ـهِ على خَفْق الهواءِ

    She danced around me

    On the fluttering of air

  8. ورفيفِ السُّحبِ والأنـ

    ـجم والشهبِ الوضاءِ

    And rustling of clouds, stars and meteors

    To others she never occurred

  9. ولغيري لم تكنْ تخـ

    ـطرُ في هذا الرواءِ

    In this spiritual retreat

    No, and did not appear like this melody

  10. لا، ولم تروِ كهذا الـ

    ـلحنِ في هذا الصَّفاءِ

    In this serenity

    And the summer nights like

  11. وليالي الصيفِ منها

    كأَماسيِّ الشتاءِ

    Winter evenings

    I bid her drink and she makes me drink

  12. بِتُّ أسقيها وتسقيـ

    ـني على محض الوفاءِ

    With pure loyalty

    A wine never touched

  13. خَمرةً ما قَبَّلَتْ غيـ

    ـر شفاهِ الأنبياءِ

    Except the lips of prophets

    A wine that was in the unseen

  14. خمرةً في الغيبِ كانتْ

    قطراتٍ من ضياءِ

    Drops of light

    Sealed with rosy dusk

  15. خُتِمَتْ بالشفَق الور

    ديِّ في أصفى إناءِ

    In the purest vessel

    Molded of clarity and purity

  16. جُبِلَتْ فَخَّارَتاهُ

    من صفاءٍ ونقاءِ

    They talked about it, but nothing sweeter

    Than the talk of the repentants

  17. حدَّثوا عنها، وما أحـ

    ـلى حديثَ الندماءِ

    One of them said without

    Boasting or pretense:

  18. قال منهم واحدٌ في

    غير زهوٍ وادِّعاءِ:

    This wine belonged

    To pious kings

  19. هذه الخمرةُ كانتْ

    لملوكٍ أتقياءِ

    They pressed it from the yield

    Of grapes in early winter

  20. عصروها من جَنَى الرَّ

    بَّاتِ في فجر شتاءِ

    Then it came to a lad

    Of stunning intelligence

  21. ثم آلتْ لغلامٍ

    رائعٍ جمِّ الذكاءِ

    Captivating gaze, an Arab

    Passionate, intensely loyal

  22. شَرِهِ النظرة، عربيـ

    ـدٍ، شديدِ الغُلَواءِ

    Who loved the sea and shunned

    The towering palace

  23. عشقَ البحرَ وعافَ الـ

    ـقصرَ مرفوعَ البناءِ

    And wandered striking

    The universe aimlessly

  24. ومضى يضربُ في الكو

    ن على غير اهتداءِ

    He lived like a pirate traversing

    Every sea and horizon

  25. عاش كالقرصانِ يطوي

    كلَّ بحرٍ وفضاءِ

    With a sail made

    Of the miracles of the obscure

  26. بشراعٍ صُنْعُهُ إحـ

    ـدى أعاجيبِ الخفاءِ

    A spinner possessing with poetry

    The reins of women

  27. غَزِلًا يملك بالشعـ

    ـر مقاليدَ النساءِ

    Whenever he lusted for a female

    Or wandered after longing

  28. كلما هام بأُنثى

    أو صَبَا بعد اشتهاءِ

    And the goblet complained to him

    Of prolonged estrangement and aloofness

  29. وشكا الكأْسُ إليهِ

    طولَ هجرٍ وجفاءِ

    He thought to drink but desisted

    Lowering his gaze in shyness

  30. هَمَّ أنْ يشربَ فارتدَّ،

    فأغْضَى في حياءِ

    He spared a drop from it

    Such is the way of devotion

  31. ضَنَّ بالقطرة منها،

    وكذا شرعُ الولاءِ

    And generations went by

    While he bled internally

  32. ومضى جيلٌ وجيلٌ،

    وهو مشبوبُ الدماءِ

    Wandering in the raging storm

    And gentle wind

  33. ضاربًا في العاصفِ الثا

    ئرِ والرِّيح الرُّخاءِ

    And fate came to him

    Or the decree of destiny

  34. وأتاهُ القَدَرُ السا

    خرُ أو حكمُ القضاءِ

    He called out to the ladies in desperation

    From intense weakness

  35. فدعا الرَّباتِ واستصـ

    ـرخَ، من فرطِ عياءِ

    So the lady of poetry came to him

    Despite reluctance

  36. فأتَتْهُ ربَّة الشعـ

    ـر على رغم التنائِي

    He said: If I die, I know not

    Who can rightly eulogize me but you

  37. قال إنْ متُّ فما أجـ

    ـدرُ مثلي بالرثاءِ

    And an elegy from you brings me to life

    Despite annihilation

  38. ورثاءٌ منك يُحييـ

    ـني علي رغم الفناءِ

    And entrusted her with his enduring

    Secret or the secret of survival

  39. وحباها سِرَّهُ الخا

    لدَ أو سِرَّ البقاءِ

    Whispering, as the light in his eyes

    Was about to expire:

  40. هامسًا، والنُّورُ في نا

    ظره وَشْكَ انطفاءِ:

    To you what I was entrusted and preserved

    In this vessel

  41. لكِ ما استُودِعْتُ أو ما

    صُنْتُ في هذا الإناءِ

    Do not refuse your love

    O daughter of heaven

  42. لا تذودي عنه معشو

    قَك، يا بِنْتَ السماءِ

    It is the sailor of a bottomless sea

    With no match

  43. إنه مَلَّاحُ بحرٍ

    ما لهُ من نُظَرَاءِ

    Through it I live, and will disseminate

    My banners in the sea

  44. فيهِ أحيا، وبه أنـ

    ـشرُ في البحر لوائِي

    This is the wine of my poetry

    My love, my muse

  45. هذه خَمرة أشعا

    ري، وحُبِّي، وغنائي

    In a new ode, or in

    The talk of ancients

  46. في قصيدٍ مُحْدَثٍ، أو

    في حديثِ القدماءِ
