The summer nights in my youth,
Are they the seductress in the sea,
Or the jinniyas of the Roman Sea,
Or a world of magic,
On a shore of dreams, melodies and flowers,
Its air breathed fragrance
Sifted by the radiance of the full moon.
The scent of oranges therein,
And the aroma of the green grapes,
Or the amorous goddesses between the waves and rocks
Making merry under a sail
Bearing damsels of hair.
Delights of beauty and light,
And some light like wine.
A lover with a burning heart sighed when he saw them,
And passed his life in grief,
Deprivation, and estrangement,
With breaths that illuminate the horizon with the embers of a volcano.
We visited him in the night
And bade him farewell at dawn,
But no eye closed for him
That assaults the stars with panic,
And the waves around him fled in fear
And returned to their caves.
They said: the appointed time has come
Or vengeance is proclaimed.
So we returned the way we came
From experience to experience,
And in the rock’s interior we hewed
A corridor of sulfur.
Our boat sailed in its sleepy waters
Like the course of mysteries.
Lights of varied hues encircled us,
Rings of pearls.
Azure, golden, green, and red,
As if the sun when she saw
Her loved one first time
Bedecked her with jewels, then was shy
Before the eyes of men on land,
So she came to him veiled
Sweeping on her current,
And cast off her braids on the rock.
Then a tooth of time betrayed her,
And she slept, all unwary!
