O melancholy poet, the night has passed

And still you remain immersed in your sorrows

Surrendering your sad head to thoughts

And your withered eyelids to wakefulness

One hand holds the quill and the other

    Trembles over your forehead

Your parched mouth bears the heat of your breath

    Which overwhelms your faint moan

You do not listen to the thunder at night

Nor are you cheered by the lightning’s flash

Silence has crept through your silent room

And stillness settled in the depths

Except for this lamp whose friendly light

    Watches over you with sympathy

And the dying embers in the hearth

    Mourn life in the ashes

You have withered your heart with grief

    And shattered your delicate being

Alas, my poet, the night has worn on

And still you remain in your place

    Neither the darkness pities you

Nor grieves for those tears in your eyes

What lies beyond this wakefulness in your mournful night

    Why not release your sorrows?

Arise now from your place and enjoy

The sweetness of the vine’s juice

And seek in your bed warmth that makes you forget

The day of sorrow and the night of tribulation

You will not be rewarded by life

For the grief and pallor you have borne

For it is for the dissolute, the frivolous and the foolish

    Not for the gifted poet!
