1. أدَنا المزارُ وقرَّت العينانِ؟

    وفرغتما من لهفةٍ وحنانِ؟

    Have we reached the shrine, and have the eyes found peace?

    Have we been relieved of yearning and lament?

  2. وهززتما بالشوقِ كفَّ مُسَلِّمٍ

    وهَفَتْ إلى تقبيله الشَّفتانِ؟

    Did you shake hands like one resigned,

    And did your lips incline to kiss it?

  3. وحلا العناقُ على اللقاءِ، وأومأتْ

    لكما الديارُ، فرفرفَ القلبانِ؟

    Did we embrace at the reunion, and did

    Our homelands beckon to us, making our hearts flutter?

  4. وعلى الثغورِ الباسماتِ بشائرٌ

    وعلى الوجوهِ المشرقاتِ أماني؟

    On the smiling banks are tidings,

    And on the radiant faces, wishes.

  5. وعلى سماءِ النيلِ من سِمَةِ الضُّحى

    وَضَحٌ، ومن ثغريكما وَضَحَانِ؟

    On the Nile's sky, in the glow of dawn,

    Is splendor, and from your lips, radiance.

  6. وعلى الضفَافِ الضاحكاتِ مزاهرٌ

    وعلى السفين الراقصاتِ أغاني؟

    On the laughing banks are flowers,

    And on the swaying ships, songs.

  7. يومٌ تَطَلَّعَتِ المُنى لصباحِه

    وتحدَّثَتْ عنهُ بكلِّ لسانِ!

    A day for which hopes were aspired,

    And which was talked of by all tongues!

  8. وسَرَى التخيُّلُ بالنفوسِ فهزَّها

    مَرَحُ الطروبِ، وغبطةُ النشوانِ

    Imagination roamed the souls, shaking them

    With the bliss and joy of youth.

  9. والأفقُ مُربدُّ الأديمِ، وأنتما

    فوق الرياح الهوجِ منطلقانِ

    The horizon has a cooled expanse, while you two

    Soar, unhindered, above the winds.

  10. تتخايلانِ على السحابِ برفرفٍ

    بلواءِ مصرَ مُظَلَّلٍ مزدانِ

    You float upon the clouds, fluttering

    The banner of Egypt, adorned and decorated.

  11. تتطلعانِ إلى السَّديمِ كأنما

    تتخيرانِ لها أعزَّ مكانِ

    You look upon the stars as if

    Choosing for them the most precious place.

  12. وتحدثانِ النجمَ عن أوصافِها

    والنجمُ مأخوذٌ بما تصفانِ

    You speak to the stars about their attributes

    While the star is captivated by your descriptions.

  13. علَّقتما بالناظرين خيالَها

    شوقًا، وأجفانُ المنونِ رواني

    You have captured the gazes with her image,

    Yearning, and the eyelids of those in love, dewy.

  14. هي خطرةٌ، أو نظرةٌ، ودرجتما

    في جوفِ عاصفةٍ من النيرانِ

    She is a glance, or a look, and you have entered

    Into a raging storm of flames.

  15. طاش الزمامُ فلا السحابُ مُقاربٌ

    لكما ولا الجَبَلُ الأشمُّ مُداني

    The reins are loose; neither the clouds are close

    To you, nor the towering mountains, submissive.

  16. وهوى الجناحُ فلا الرياحُ خوافقٌ

    فيه، ولا الأرواحُ طوع عِنانِ

    The wings have fallen; neither the winds are in sync

    With them, nor are the spirits tamed.

  17. سَدَّتْ طريقكما الحُتوفُ وأنتما

    تتحرقانِ هوًى إلى الأوطانِ

    The disasters have blocked your way while you two

    Burn with longing for the homelands.

  18. ومشى الرَّدى بكما وتحتَ جناحه

    جسمانِ بل قلبانِ محترقانِ!!

    And misfortune walked with you, while beneath its wing

    Were two bodies - or rather, two hearts aflame!

  19. يا ملهميَّ الشعرَ، هذا موقفٌ

    الشعرُ فيه فوق كلِّ بيانِ

    O, inspirer of poetry - this situation

    Poetry in it transcends all expression.

  20. لوددتُ لو أنِّي عرضتُ بناتهِ

    في المهرجانِ نواثرَ الريحانِ

    I wish I presented its daughters

    At the festival, basil blooms.

  21. وعقدتُ من شعري ومن ريحانِها

    إكليلَ غارٍ أو نظيمَ جُمانِ

    And that I wove from my poetry and its basil

    A garland or a string of pearls.

  22. أنا من يُغَنِّي بالمصارع في العُلا

    ويَشيدُ بالآلام والأحزانِ

    I am one who sings of great deeds up high

    And praises suffering and sorrows.

  23. ماذا وراءَ الدمع من أمنيةِ

    أوْ ما وراءَ النَّوحِ من نشدانِ؟

    What wish lies behind tears?

    Or what longing behind laments?

  24. أصبحتُ ذا القلبِ الحديدِ، وإن أكُنْ

    في الناسِ ذاك الشاعرَ الإنساني

    I have become iron-hearted, though among

    People I remain the poet of humanity.

  25. ووهبتُ قلبي للخطارِ، فللهوى

    شَطرٌ، وللعلياءِ شطرٌ ثاني

    And I have devoted my heart to peril - half

    To passion, the other half to loftiness.

  26. وعشقتُ موتَ الخالدين، وعِفتُ من

    عمري حقارةَ كلِّ يومٍ فاني

    And I have loved the death of the immortal, and have been

    Weary of the pettiness of each ephemeral day.

  27. لولا الضحايا الباذلونَ دماءَهُمْ

    طوتِ الوجودَ غيابةُ النسيانِ

    If not for the sacrificing martyrs

    The void of oblivion would envelope existence.

  28. هذا الدمُ الغالي الذي أرخصتُم

    هو في بناء المجدِ أولُ باني

    This precious blood which you have sacrificed

    Is the first brick in the building of glory.

  29. تبنونَ للوطنِ الحياةَ وهكذا

    تبني الحياةَ مصارع الشجعانِ!

    You build life for the nation, and so too

    You build life, O valiant martyrs!

  30. مثَّلتما في الموتِ وحدةَ أمةٍ

    ذاقت من التفريقِ كلَّ هوانِ

    You embodied in death the unity of a nation

    That has tasted all kinds of disgrace and humiliation.

  31. مسحَ الهلالُ دمَ الصليبِ وضمَّدَتْ

    جُرْحَ الأهلَّةِ راحةُ الصلبانِ

    The crescent cleansed the blood of the cross, and the

    Solace of the crucifixes healed the wounds of the crescents.

  32. إن كان في ساح الردى لكليكُما

    مثلٌ، ففي ساحِ الفدا مَثَلانِ!

    If for each of you there is an example in the field of calamity,

    In the field of sacrifice there are two!

  33. عذرًا «فرنسا» إن جزعتِ فإنه

    قَدَرٌ، وما لكِ بالقضاءِ يدانِ

    Sorry, France, if you despair, for it

    Is fate, and you have no power over destiny.

  34. هزَّتك بالرَّوعات قبلَ مصابِنا

    أممٌ ملَكنَ أعنَّةَ الطيرانِ

    Nations that possessed the heights of the skies shook you

    With terrors before our calamity.

  35. واسيتِ مصرَ فما هوى نجمٌ لها

    إلَّا ومنك عليه صدرٌ حاني

    And you forgot Egypt - so no star has fallen for her

    Except that you have for it an affectionate breast.

  36. حيِّي سمَاءَ الفرقدينِ وقدِّسي

    من تربِك الغالي أعزَّ مكانِ

    Greet the sky of the two lieutenants and sanctify

    From your soil the most precious place.

  37. فهنا دمٌ روَّى ثراكِ، وها هنا

    قلبانِ تحت الصخرِ يختلجانِ

    For here is blood that irrigated your land, and here

    Are two hearts beneath the rock, fluttering.

  38. يا أمةَ الشهداءِ أنتِ بثُكلهمْ

    أدرى، وبالأحزانِ والأشجانِ

    O nation of martyrs, you know best their pain,

    And the sorrows and agonies.

  39. الغارُ أحقرُ أن يكلِّلَ هامَهمْ

    ورءوسُهم أغلى من التيجانِ

    The cave is too unworthy to crown their zeal,

    And their heads are more precious than crowns.

  40. لِغَدٍ صبَرْنَا للزمانِ، وفي غدٍ

    نعفو ونغفرُ للزمان الجاني

    For tomorrow we are patient with time, and tomorrow

    We forgive and pardon time the unjust.

  41. ونمدُّ للأيام كفَّ مصافحٍ

    يجزي المسيءَ إليه بالإحسانِ

    And we extend to the days a handshake

    That rewards the wrongdoer with kindness.

  42. وَنُدِلُّ فوقَ النيِّراتِ بموكبٍ

    فيه الحِجَى والبأسُ يلتقيانِ

    And we parade over grievances in a procession

    Wherein fear and might come together.

  43. ونهزُّ أجنحةَ الحياةِ ونعتلي

    بخفافهنَّ مناكبَ العقبانِ

    And we flap the wings of life and mount

    Upon their lightness the shoulders of eagles.

  44. وننصُّ رايةَ مصرَ، أنَّى تشتهي

    مصرٌ، ويرضاهُ لها الهرمانِ

    And we raise the flag of Egypt, wherever Egypt

    Desires, and the pyramids approve for her.

  45. أقَبل سلاحَ الجوِّ، إنَّ عيوننا

    للِقاكَ لم يغمضْ لها جفانِ

    Welcome, O Air Force! Our eyes for seeing you

    Have not closed their lids.

  46. أقْبِل سلاحَ الجوِّ، إن قلوبنا

    كادتْ تطيرُ إليكَ بالخفقانِ

    Welcome, O Air Force! Our hearts have nearly

    Flown to you in throbbing.

  47. رفرفْ على البلدِ الأمينِ وحيِّهِ

    وانزلْ إلى الوادي، وطرْ بأمانِ

    Flutter over the safe country, greeting it,

    And descend into the valley, serenely and safely.

  48. كن للسلامِ وقاءَه، ولواءَه

    وشعاعَه الهادي على الأزمانِ

    Be for peace its protection and banner

    And guiding light across the ages.

  49. وإذا دعتكَ الحادثاتُ فلبِّها

    بحميَّةِ المستقتِلِ المتفاني

    And if events call you, then meet them

    With the zeal of the dedicated fighter.

  50. ليضنَّ بالأعمارِ كلُّ معاجزٍ

    وليخْشَ حربَ الدهرِ كلُّ جبانِ

    Let every transgressor despair of lifetimes,

    And let every coward fear the war of time.

  51. لِيَثُر على القضبان كلُّ معذبٍ

    وليحطمِ الأصفادَ كلُّ معاني

    Let every tortured soul revolt against prison bars

    And every free spirit break the shackles.

  52. هذا الزمانُ الحرُّ ما لشعوبه

    صبرٌ على الأصفادِ والقضبانِ

    For the peoples of this free time, there is no

    Patience for shackles and prison bars.

  53. لكمُ الغدُ المرجوُّ فتيانَ الحمى

    واليومَ يومكُمُ العظيمُ الشانِ

    You, the youth of zeal, have the future hoped for,

    And today is your mighty and glorious day.

  54. لا تثنينَّكُمُ المنايا، إنها

    سرُّ البقاءِ وسُنَّةُ العمرانِ

    Do not be discouraged by death, for it

    Is the secret of survival and the way of civilization.

  55. كونوا من الفادينَ إن عزَّ الفدا

    كم في الفداءِ من الخلودِ معاني

    Be among the sacrificing, for the honor of sacrifice -

    How many eternal meanings lie in sacrifice!

  56. ولئن حُرمتمْ من متاعِ شبابكم

    إنَّ النعيمَ يُنال بالحرمان

    And if you are deprived of the pleasures of your youth,

    Indeed, bliss is attained through deprivation.

  57. لِيَكُنْ لكمْ في كلِّ أفقٍ طائرٌ

    ليَكُنْ لكمْ في كلِّ أرض باني

    May you have, across every horizon, a bird,

    And in every land, a builder.

  58. وليستخفَّ البحرَ من أسطولِكم

    عَلَمٌ كنجم المدلجِ الحيرانِ

    And may a flag from your armada

    Sail the sea like a confused star.

  59. سيروا بهدْيِ الأحمرينِ ومهِّدوا

    بهما سبيلَ المجدِ والسلطانِ

    Walk in the guidance of the two Reds, and pave

    Through them the path of glory and rule.

  60. لم تبصِر الأممُ الحياةَ على سنًى

    كالنار في شَفَقِ الدماءِ القاني!

    The nations have not seen life blossom

    As fire in the crimson sunset of blood!
