1. هَيِّئِي الكأْسَ والوَتَرْ

    تلك «كومو» مَدَى النَّظَرْ

    Prepare the cup and lute,

    That is "Komu," far sighted,

  2. واصدحي، يا خواطري

    طُوِيَتْ شُقَّةُ السَّفَرْ

    And sing out, my thoughts,

    The journey's rug has been folded,

  3. ودَنَتْ جَنَّةُ المُنَى

    وحَلَا عندها المَقَرْ

    And the garden of wishes has come near,

    And settled next to it, the abode,

  4. قد بُعِثْنَا بها على

    موعد غيرِ مُنْتَظَرْ

    We have been resurrected by it to

    An unexpected promise,

  5. في مساءٍ كأَنَّهُ

    حُلُمُ الشَّيْخِ بالصِّغَرْ

    In an evening as though it were

    An old man's dream of youth,

  6. البحيْراتُ والجبا

    لُ توشَّحْنَ بالشَّجَرْ

    The lakes and mountains dressed

    In trees and obscured in mist and shone in moonlight,

  7. وتَنَقَّبْنَ بالغما

    م وأسفرنَ بالقمرْ

    "Le Borne" awake, dressed

    In the garment of vigil,

  8. «والبروناتُ» غادةٌ

    لبَسَتْ حُلَّةَ السهَرْ

    Above it the countries were scattered

    As flowers are scattered,

  9. نُثِرَتْ فَوقها الديا

    رُ كما يُنْثَرُ الزَّهرْ

    And we crossed its expanses,

    And it gestured to the one who crossed,

  10. وعَبَرْنَا رحابَها

    فأشارتْ لمن عَبَرْ

    Wants to ride danger,

    We soared intoxicated to its narcotic

  11. هاكَها قُبلَةً، فَمَنْ

    رامَ فليركبِ الخَطَرْ

    Flocks followed by flocks

    In hovering glass,

  12. فسمونا لخدْرِهَا

    زُمرًا تلْوُها زُمَرْ

    No smoke or sparks,

    Space carries us beyond

  13. في زجاجٍ مُحَلقٍ

    لا دخانٌ ولا شرَرْ

    On green silk,

    A ladder resembling a filmstrip

  14. يتخطَّى بنا الفضا

    ءَ على السُّنْدُسِ النَّضِرْ

    Rising to vision,

    To the star we climb

  15. سُلَّمٌ يُشبِهُ الصِّرَا

    طَ تسامى على البَصَرْ

    And down to the clouds we slope,

    And we landed on a summit

  16. فإلَى النجْمِ مُرْتَقَى

    وإلى السُّحْبِ منْحَدِرْ

    Beyond which is the summit of thought,

    Delight in its treasures

  17. وحللنا بِقِمَّةٍ

    دونها قِمَّةُ الفِكَرْ

    Reserved for lovers,

    Babylon? Or a lake?

  18. بَهَجٌ في كنوزِهَا

    للمحبِّينَ مُدَّخَرْ

    Or palaces of pearls?

    Or visions of eternity in life

  19. بابلٌ؟ أمْ بحيْرةٌ؟

    أمْ قصورٌ من الدُّرَرْ؟

    Personified for humankind?

    How lovely were its evenings

  20. أم رُؤى الخلدِ في الحيا

    ةِ تَمَثَّلْنَ للْبَشَرْ؟

    And yearning for the first times

    And craving for the sailboat

  21. حبَّذَا أُمسياتُهَا

    وحنينًا إلى البُكَرْ

    Prepared for the journey,

    The hearts forgot their worries

  22. ونزوعًا إلى السفينِ

    تَهَيَّأْنَ للسَّفَرْ

    And shone for conversation,

    Faces bloomed like flowers

  23. نَسِيَتْ شُغْلَهَا القلوبُ

    وهَلَّلْنَ للسَّمَرْ

    In summer bloomed for rain,

    Features of sacrifice,

  24. أوجُهٌ مثلما رَنَتْ

    زهرةُ الصيف للْمَطَرْ

    Crescents of pleasure,

    They glow with youth

  25. أضحيانيَّةُ السِّماتِ

    هلاليَّةُ الطُّرَرْ

    And beckon with adventure,

    A rising that brings joy to the miserable

  26. يَتَوَهَّجْنَ بالشبا

    بِ وَيَنْدينَ بالخفَرْ

    And gives him life,

    It grants good fortune to whomever it wants

  27. طلعةٌ تُسعِدُ الشقيَّ

    وتعطي لَهُ العمُرْ

    And keeps, and does not refuse,

    Heaven looks only at these images

  28. تمنح الحظَّ من تشا

    ءُ وتُبقِي، ولا تَذَرْ

    To see God a skilled creator, a miracle worker,

    Poet of the Nile sail it,

  29. إنَّما تنظرُ السما

    ءُ إلى هذه الصوَرْ

    Sing every innovation,

    Thirty passed

  30. لترى الله خالقًا

    مُبدِعًا، مُعجزَ الأثَرْ

    In nonsense and nonsense,

    So be provisioned by bliss

  31. شاعرَ النيلِ طُفْ بها

    غَنِّهَا كلَّ مبتكَرْ

    For your other days,

    Where is the valley of palm trees, or

  32. الثلاثونَ قد مَضَتْ

    في التفاهاتِ والهذَرْ

    Its treasures of Cairo?

    Do not say: the land is fertile,

  33. فتزَوذَدْ من النعيـ

    ـمِ لأَيَّامِكَ الأُخَرْ

    For here the stone has bloomed!!

    And inspires whoever felt!!

  34. أين وادي النخيلِ، أمْ

    قَاهِرِيَّاتُهُ الغُرَرْ؟

    Oh, if not for loved ones

    Who disembarked on the river bank,

  35. لا تَقُلْ: أخصبَ الثَّرَى

    فهُنَا أَوْرَقَ الحَجَرْ!!

    And pure companions

    And generous conduct,

  36. ها هنا يَشْعُرُ الجَما

    دُ ويوحِي لمن شَعَرْ!!

    I would wish for a balcony

    For me among these rocks,

  37. آهِ لولا أحبةٌ

    نزلوا شاطئَ النَّهَرْ

    To spend my life next to it

    Without diverting my gaze,

  38. ورُفاتٌ مُطَهَّرٌ

    وكريمٌ من السِّيَرْ

    For he who saw has won

    And he who grasped has lived,

  39. لتمنيتُ شُرْفَةً

    ليَ في هذه الحُجَرْ

    O daughter of the new world, pray for a dusty world

    In my blood the spirit of the Bedouin and the settled,

  40. أقطعُ العمرَ عندها

    غيرَ وانٍ عن النظرْ

    And songs for whoever sang

    And meanings for whoever took pride,

  41. فلقد فاز من رأى

    ولقد عاش من ظفِرْ

    What makes you happy? Speak!

    For in your eye is the news,

  42. يا ابنةَ العالَمِ الجديـ

    ـدِ صِلِي عالَمًا غَبَرْ

    Caution does not benefit them,

    We are two raging souls,

  43. في دَمِي من تُرَاثِهِ

    نَفْحَةُ البَدْوِ والحَضرْ

    And two bodies of hell,

    So forgive the soul if it transgresses,

  44. وأغانٍ لمن شَدَا

    ومعانٍ لِمَنْ فَخَرْ

    And forgive the body if it avenges!

    The wine of Babylon is gone

  45. ما تُسِرِّينَ؟ أَفْصِحِي!

    إنَّ في عينكِ الخبَرْ

    And the cup has fallen and shattered,

    And here is the vine of eternity, so blessed is he who squeezed

  46. الغريبانِ ها هُنَا

    ليس يُجديهِمَا الحذَرْ

    Why, while the spring is flowing,

    Does the thirsty one complain of chest pain?

  47. نحن رُوحانِ عاصِفَا

    نِ وجسمانِ من سقَرْ

    And for whom are these houris

    Immersed in splendor?

  48. فاعذري الرُّوح إنْ طغى

    واعذري الجسمَ إن ثأَرْ!

    They frolic playfully with prohibition

    Like a child playing with a toy,

  49. نَضَبَتْ خَمْرُ بابلٍ

    وهوى الكاسُ وانكسَرْ

    Purer than meteors

    And more hidden than destiny,

  50. وهُنا كَرمةُ الخلو

    دِ فطوبَى لمن عَصَرْ

    And for whom do breasts quiver

    And hair cascade?

  51. فِيمَ، والنبعُ دافِقٌ،

    يَشتكي الظامئُ الصَّدَرْ؟

    Each intimacy for its intimacy

    Has ambitions for the chest and took it forcefully,

  52. ولِمَنْ هَذِهِ العيو

    نُ تغمَّرْنَ بالحَوَرْ؟

    It bit into the garment and complained

    Of the coarseness of fabric and fur,

  53. بتنَ يلعبن بالنُّهَى

    لَعِبَ الطفلِ بالأُكَرْ

    The trait of the tortured bird in its cage,

    In it, it pecked,

  54. هنَّ أصفى من الشُّعا

    عِ وأخفى مِنَ القدَرْ

    And for whom has the smile bloomed

    And the hair cascaded?

  55. ولمن توشِكُ الثُّدَى

    وَثْبَةَ الطيرِ في السَّحَرْ؟

    Ripe fruit ready for harvest

    How can we not pluck the fruit?

  56. كلُّ إلفٍ لإِلْفِهِ

    هَمَّ بالصَّدْرِ وابتدَرْ

    Adam did not refuse immortality

    Or go astray in it or stumble!

  57. عضَّ في الثوبِ واشتَكَى

    وطأَةَ الخزِّ والوَبَرْ

    A slip that inflicts shame

    And shows God who blasphemed!

  58. سِمَةُ الطائرِ المعذَّ

    بِ في قَيْدِهِ نَقَرْ

    Our cup, laughing bubbles,

    Filtered of sediment,

  59. وَلِمَنْ رفَّتِ المَبَا

    سمُ واسْتَرْسَلَ الشَّعَرْ؟

    So pour the wine and sip it

    To the melody of the lute,

  60. ثَمرٌ ناضجُ الْجَنَى

    كيف لا نقطُفُ الثَّمَرْ

    And if you want, let me sip it

    To the rhythm of rain,

  61. ما أبى الخلدَ آدمٌ

    أو غَوى فيه أو عَثَرْ!

    For tomorrow youth will leave

    And memories will remain for us!

  62. زَلَّةٌ تورِثُ الحِجَى

    وتُرِي اللهَ من كَفَرْ!

  63. كأسنا ضاحِكُ الحبَابِ،

    مُصَفًّى من الكَدَرْ

  64. فاسكُبِي الخَمْرَ وارشفيـ

    ـهِ على رَنَّةِ الوَتَرْ

  65. وإذا شئتِ فاسقنيـ

    ـه على نَغْمَةِ المطَرْ

  66. فغدًا يذهبُ الشبا

    بُ وتَبقى لنا الذِّكَرْ!
