1. شقيٌّ أجنَّتهُ الدياجي السوادفُ

    سليبَ رقادٍ أرَّقته المخاوفُ

    Wretched is he whom dark nights have afflicted

    With wakeful misery that worries have pricked

  2. ترامى به ليلٌ كأنَّ سواده

    به الأرض غرقى، والنجوم كواسفُ

    A night has befallen him, so dark it seems

    The earth is drowned, the stars have been eclipsed

  3. إلى أين تمضي، أيها التائهُ الخُطى،

    يساريك برقٌ أو يباريك عاصفُ؟

    Where are you headed, o wanderer with hesitant steps

    With lightning to left, or storm to right that lashes?

  4. رأيتك في بحر الظلام كأنَّما

    إلى الشاطئِ المجهول يدعوك هاتفُ

    I saw you on the sea of darkness as though

    A voice calls you to the unknown shore it beckons

  5. تخوض الدُّجى سهمانَ والنجم حائر

    يسائل: من ذاك الشقيُّ المجازفُ؟!

    You tread the gloom like arrows, and the stars wander

    Asking: Who is that hapless risk-taker?!

  6. طريدًا يفرُّ الوحشُ من وقع خطوِه

    ويعزبُ عنه الصِّلُّ، والصِّلُّ واجفُ

    The beasts flee the echo of his steps

    And the wolves shun him, yet shunners keep near

  7. كأن إله الشرِّ يقتحم الورى

    أوَانَ الردى في برده الرثِّ زاحفُ

    As if the god of evil raids the earth

    Or the plague crawls, with its icy chill creeping

  8. فوا عجبًا!! لم تحملِ الأرض مثلَه

    ولا طاف منه بالدُّجُنَّةِ طائفُ

    Goodness! Never did the earth bear his like

    Nor roamed its lands or gloomed vales his figure

  9. يخاف الثرى مسراهُ وهو يخافه

    وبينهما يسري الدُّجى وهو خائفُ

    The soil fears his footsteps, and he fears it

    Between them creeps the gloom, each too frightened

  10. تُرى أيُّ سرٍّ في الظلام محجَّب؟

    أليس له من نبأة القلب كاشفُ؟

    What secret lurks in the darkness, concealed?

    Does his heart's plight reveal no tidings?

  11. أجبْني طريدَ الأرض، إني يهزني

    إليك هوًى، من جانب الغيب، شاغفُ!

    Answer me, outcast of earth, for longing

    From the unknown draws me toward you, doting!

  12. فردَّدَ ذاك الطيفُ صوتًا محبَّبًا

    إليَّ كلحنٍ ردَّدته المعازفُ

    That specter echoed a beloved voice

    To me, like tunes echoed from viols strumming

  13. وقال: أجل إنِّي الطريدُ وإنه

    لسرٌّ تهز القلبَ منه الرواجفُ

    He said: Yes I'm the outcast, and my secret

    Shakes hearts with tremors and quakes alarming

  14. أتسألكَ الأفلاك عني، أنا الذي

    رمته الدياجي والرعودُ القواصفُ؟

    Do you ask the planets about me, when

    Dark clouds and thunder-crackers strike me, harming?

  15. أجلْ: إن ذاتي يا نجيِّي تنكرت

    لعينك، لكنَّ القلوبَ تَعارَفُ؟

    Yes, my essence is obscured from your eyes

    But hearts, my savior, are intertwining

  16. وما أنا إلا من بني الأرض ناءَ بي

    مقيمُ عذابي والشقاءُ المحالفُ

    I'm but one of earth's people who lament

    My torment, while misfortune keeps befriending

  17. وما كان هذا النوءُ والموجُ والدُّجى

    ليرهَب نفسًا حقَّرتْ ما تصادفُ

    This wailing, waves and gloom were not to frighten

    A soul that spurns all it encounters during

  18. سواءٌ لديها أشرَق الفجرُ أم سجت

    غياهبُ في سرِّ الدجى تتكاثَفُ

    To it, dawn or darkness knitted thick, the same

    In the veil of gloom all tightly hemming

  19. هَي الأرض مهدُ الشرِّ من قبل خلقنا

    ومن قبل أن دبَّتْ عليها الزواحفُ

    The earth was evil's cradle long before

    We lived, long before reptiles were threading

  20. غذتها الضحايا بالجسوم فأخصبت

    وأترعها سيلٌ من الدَّم جارفُ

    It fed on victims' flesh to fertile grow

    And drank a torrent of blood wildly spreading

  21. وهيهات تشفِي غُلَّةً من دمائنا

    ويا ليتَ ترويها الدموعُ الذَّوارفُ

    Alas no blood of ours can quench its thirst

    Would that tears in floods could wet its bedding!

  22. ولي قصةٌ يُشجي القلوبَ حديثُها

    ويعجز عن تصويرها، اليوم، واصفُ

    I have a tale that wrenches hearts when told

    Beyond any bard's skill at portraying

  23. دعوتُ إلى حرِّيَّةِ الرأي معشرًا

    ثقافتهم ضربٌ من العلم زائفُ

    I called for freedom of thought among throngs

    Whose culture was a false, twisted learning

  24. يرون بأنَّ العيشَ لذَّاتُ ماجنٍ

    وأن قصاراهُ حُلًى وزخارفُ

    Who believed that living was but to indulge

    And its heights were trinkets and trappings discerning

  25. إذا لمحوا نور الحقيقة أغمضوا

    وقالوا: ألا أين الضياءُ المشارفُ؟

    When the light of truth shone, they shut their eyes

    Saying: Where is the promised clear burning?

  26. عجبتُ لهذا العقل حُرًّا فما له

    من الوهم يُمسي وهو في القيد راسفُ

    I'm astonished at reason, supposedly free,

    Yet tangled in illusions concerning

  27. هو الحقُّ في الكوخ الحقير فحيِّه

    وليس بما تُزهى هناك المقاصفُ

    Truth is found in the humble cottage, give it life

    Not what the lavished palaces are ferreting

  28. هنا تَصدُقُ الإنسانَ عاطفةُ الهوى

    إذا كذَّبت ربَّ القصورِ العواطفُ

    While the palace's feelings are cheating

    I'm tired of life, and can see no option

  29. لقد سئمت نفسي الحياةَ وما أرى

    بديلًا عن الكأس التي أنا راشفُ

    Except the cup I'm busy perusing

    Is genius rejected and scorned in the East?

  30. أيُجحدُ في الشرق النبوغ ويُزدَرى

    ويشقى بمصر النابهونَ الغطارفُ؟

    Do bright stars suffer misery enduring?

    They roam horizons as though they were

  31. يجوبون آفاقَ الحياة كأنهم

    رواحلُ بيدٍ شردتها العواصفُ

    Camels a hand had misguided, wandering

    Prey in the desert, no oasis to gentle,

  32. طرائدَ في صحراءَ، لا نبعَ واحةٍ

    يرقُّ، ولا دانٍ من الظلِّ وارفُ

    No sheltering dale with shade massing

    In me there lies a resentful heart engulfed

  33. ألا إنَّ لي قلبًا طعينًا تحوطُه

    عصائبُ تنزو من دمي ولفائفُ

    By bonds pouring from my blood outpouring

    My sorrows made it sickly and miserable

  34. أقلَّتهُ أحنائي ذماءً ولم أزَلْ

    به في غار الحادثات أجازفُ

    As I ventured on in the caverns of daring

    Like an eagle struck mid-flight by an arrow

  35. كما رفَّ نسرٌ راشه السهمُ فارتقى

    خفوقَ جناحٍ وهو بالدمِ نازفُ

    Yet flapping its wings though blood escaping

    I came to this place shaken by yearning

  36. أتيتُ إلى هذا المكان تهزُّني

    إليه عهودٌ للشباب سوالفُ

    For the past days of youth gaily cavorting

    I murmur to childhood and teens fancies

  37. أردِّدُ فيها للطفولة والصِّبا

    أحاديثَ شتَّى كلهن طرائفُ

    Diverse, all of them whimsical sporting

    I bid them farewell before we part

  38. أودِّعها قبل الفراقِ وإنني

    أفارقها والقلب لهفانُ كاسفُ

    While lamenting heart is regretting and hurting

    To where thought grows free, its truths scattered

  39. إلى حيثُ ينمو الرأيُ حُرًّا تذيعه

    من الحقِّ فيها ألسنٌ وصحائفُ

    By tongues and pages freely disporting

    Perhaps some land beneath unfamiliar skies

  40. لعلَّ بلادًا ما علتني سماؤها

    ولا نبَّهتْ فيها لذكري عوارفُ

    Where no kindred appreciated my working

    Will let me live free in thought, shouting my views

  41. أعيش بها حُرَّ العقيدة هاتفًا

    برأيِيَ إمَّا أسعدتني المواقفُ!

    Whether times favor me or misfortune
