1. ماء العيونِ على الشهيدِ ذرافِ

    لو أنّ فيضاً من معينك كافي

    The martyr's eyes are waters pouring down

    If but a stream from your spring could avail

  2. إنْ لم يَفِ الدمعُ الهتونُ بسيبهِ

    فلمن يَفي بعدَ الخليل الوافي

    If tears cannot requite him on that fateful morn

    Who then can requite after that true friend?

  3. شيئان مَا عيبَ البكاءُ عليهما

    فقدُ الشباب وفرقَةُ الأُلافِ

    Two things never disgraced by tears for them

    The loss of youth and parting of companions

  4. أغْرَقْتُ همي بالدموعِ فخانني

    وطفَا فويلي من غريقٍ طَافي

    I drowned my cares in tears but they betrayed me

    How wretched is a drowning wretch who surfaces

  5. وإذا بكَى القلبُ الحزين فما له

    راقٍ ولا لبكائِه من شافي

    When a grieving heart weeps, what cure has it

    Neither soothing nor healing for its crying

  6. والدمعُ تهمي في الشدائدِ سحبُه

    ومن الدموع مماطل وموافي

    Tears are my complaint in adversities, drawn out

    Some lingering, and some quickly passing

  7. حَارتْ به كفي تحاولُ مسحهُ

    فكأنَّها تُغْريه بالإيكافِ

    My palms are confused, trying to wipe them away

    As if coaxing the tears to stop

  8. وأجلُّ ما يلقى الشريفُ ثوابَه

    إنْ غسّلَتْه مدامعُ الأشرافِ

    The noblest reward a noble receives

    Is when the tears of nobles wash him

  9. طيرُ المنيةِ صحْتَ أشأم صيحةٍ

    وهززتَ شرَّ قوادِم وخوافِي

    Death's bird shrieked an awful shriek

    And shook the evils of fates to come

  10. وعلقت بالأملِ العزيز محصّناً

    بظوامِىء الأرماحِ والأسيافِ

    You clung to precious hope, fortified

    By spearheads and the blades of swords

  11. والجندُ والأعوانُ ترعى موكِباً

    ما حازه سابُورُ ذو الأكتَافِ

    The soldiers and supporters mournfully escort

    What Sabur of broad shoulders never achieved

  12. يفدون بالمهجاتِ مهجة قائدٍ

    في كلِّ منعرجٍ وكلِّ مطَافِ

    Offering their lives for the life of a leader

    On every pass and every lookout

  13. رانَ الذهولُ فكل عقل حائر

    وجرى القضاءُ فكل طرف غافي

    Stupor prevailed and every mind perplexed

    While destiny flowed and every eye slumbered

  14. والموتُ أعمى في يديه سهامه

    يرمي البريةَ من وراء سجَافِ

    Blind death's arrows strike the innocent

    Shooting from behind ignorance's veils

  15. والموتُ قد يخفى حَماهُ بنسمةٍ

    هفّافةٍ أو في رحيقِ سُلافِ

    And death can be obscured by a gentle breeze

    Or the nectar of a drink that slakes thirst

  16. يغشَى الفتى ولو اطمأنّ لموئلٍ

    في الجو أو في غمرةِ الرجّافِ

    Overcoming even one content in refuge

    On high or in the tumult of the flooded

  17. ويحَ الكنانةِ بعد نزعِ شِغافِها

    أتعيشُ في الدنيا بِغير شِغافِ

    It robs the loved one of her cloak after removing her veil

    Can one live in this world without a cloak or veil?

  18. قد عاشَ يحمل رُوحَه في كفِّهِ

    ما قَالَ في هولِ النضال كفافِ

    He lived carrying his soul in his palms

    Never saying "enough" in the heat of struggle

  19. يلقَى الكارثَ باسماً متألقاً

    والدهرُ يعصِفُ والخطوبُ سَوافي

    He faced disaster with a shining name

    While fate raged and calamities came flooding

  20. والموت يكشرُ عن نُيوبِ مَشانقٍ

    غُبرِ الوُجوهِ دميمةِ الأطرافِ

    Death bares its hanging ropes

    To the grimy faces and torn limbs

  21. بينَ الرياح الهُوجِ يزأر مثلَها

    ويثورُ في غَضَبٍ وفي إعْنافِ

    Among raging winds it roars like them

    Seething in rage and bellowing threats

  22. يَرنو إلى استقلال مصر كما رنَتْ

    عين المحب لطارقِ الأطياف

    Yearning for Egypt's independence, as yearned

    The eye of a lover for the light of dawn

  23. ما ارتاعَ مِن حبسٍ ولا أسرٍ ولا

    زَجْرٍ ولا قتلٍ ولا إرجَافِ

    Never fearing imprisonment, captivity, deterrence

    Killing, or tremors caused by terror

  24. وإذا دهتهُ الحادثاتُ بفادحٍ

    لم تلق إلاّ هَزّةَ استخفافِ

    If disasters overwhelmed him horribly

    They met only disdain and indifference from him

  25. هابتْهُ أسبابُ المنيةِ جَهَرةً

    فَرمتهُ خائنةً بِموت زُؤافِ

    The causes of death were too weak for him

    So betrayed him traitorously with easy death

  26. مَوتُ الكرامِ البيضِ فوقَ جيادِهم

    لا فَوقَ نُمرقَةٍ وتحتَ طِرافِ

    The death of the virtuous whites on their steeds

    Not on a deathbed under coverings

  27. فلكم تَمنَّى ابنُ الوليد مَنِيةً

    بينَ الصواهِل والقَنا الرعّافِ

    Many times Ibn Alwalid wished for death

    Among the swords on the battlefield

  28. ذهبَ الجريءُ الندبُ ذخرُ بلاده

    غَوْثُ الصريخِ ونُجعةُ المعتافِ

    The bold pillar of his country is gone

    Succor for the desperate and sanctuary for refugees

  29. خُلقٌ كأمواهِ السحابِ مُطَهَّرٌ

    وسَريرة كلآلِىء الأصدافِ

    A nature like the clouds' rain, pure

    And an inner self like pearls inside oyster shells

  30. وتَبسمٌ للمعضِلاتِ كأنّه

    إشراقُ وجهِ الروضةِ المئنافِ

    A smile at adversities as if it were

    The radiant face of a meadow renewed

  31. ونقَاءُ سُكَّان السماء يحوطه

    رَبُّ السماءِ بعزّةٍ وعَفافِ

    The heavens' people's purity surrounds him

    As God of Heaven guards him with might and chastity

  32. ونزاهة سِيقَتْ لها الدنيا فما

    ظفِرتْ بغير تنكُّرٍ وعِيافِ

    And integrity that he led the world to

    Without any pretense or falsity from it

  33. عُمَرٌ حوى الدنيا ولم يملك سِوَى

    شاءٍ كأعوادِ القِسيِّ عِجَافِ

    A life that contained the world but owned only

    Tent poles like dry, leafless trees

  34. والمرءُ إن يَخشى الدنيةَ في الغِنَى

    يقنَعْ بِعيشٍ في الحياة كَفافِ

    And if one fears greed in wealth

    Let him be content with sufficient life

  35. قد كانَ في غيرِ التحرُّج مَنفذٌ

    سَهلٌ إلى الآلافِ والآلافِ

    Open was the way to thousands and more

    Without discomfort or hardship

  36. مَهما يَقُلْ من خالفوه فإنّه

    في نُبلهِ فردٌ بِغير خِلافِ

    However much those who opposed him speak

    He was uniquely noble, without peer

  37. وعَزيمةٌ لا الصعبُ في قاموسِها

    صَعبٌ ولا خافِي الطريقِ بخافِي

    A will that did not accept difficulty

    No path obscure to an obscure path

  38. فإذا أرادَ فكل شيءٍ آلةٌ

    وإذَا رمَى فالويلُ للأهدافِ

    When he wanted, all things were his tools

    And when he shot, woe to his targets!

  39. يزدادُ في ظُلَمِ النوازلِ بِشْرهُ

    كمْ كُدرةٍ تحتَ النميرِ الصافي

    In the darkness of tribulations, his insight shone

    Like pure starlight in the blackest night

  40. يُخْشى ويُرهبُ كالمنيةِ مُرهفاً

    عَدْلٌ لدَى الإرهابِ والإرهافِ

    Feared yet gentle, when firmness was needed

    Justice with deterrence or use of force

  41. فإذا طلبتَ الحقَّ منه وجدتَهُ

    سهل الرحابِ مُوَطّأ الأكنافِ

    If you sought truth from him you found

    Easy grace and humility in him

  42. ذِكرى كحاليةِ الرياضِ شميمُها

    راحُ النفوسِ وراحةُ المستافِ

    Memories of him are like the scent of meadows

    Comforting souls and soothing aspirations

  43. إنّ الفَتى ما فِيه من أخلاقهِ

    فإذا ذَهبْنَ فكُلُّ شيءٍ مافي

    The noble youth possesses only

    What his character traits contain

  44. ما زانَه الشرفُ المنيفُ بِغيرِها

    ولو انتَمى لسراةِ عبدِ منافِ

    Nothing else enhanced his honorable dignity

    Even were he of ancestors from Mudar's line

  45. عِشنا على الأسلافِ طولَ حياتِنا

    حتى سئمنا عِشرةَ الأسلافِ

    We lived following ancestors all our lives

    Until we were bored of following ancestors!

  46. العبقريُّ حياتُه من صُنعِه

    لا صنِع أسماءٍ ولا أوْصَافِ

    The genius - his life is his own making

    Not the making of names and attributes

  47. يَكفيهِ مِنْ شَرفِ المجادة أنّه

    درسَ العصور وقُدوةَ الأخلافِ

    It's enough that he studied times' lessons

    And was guided by the wisdom of successors

  48. عابوا السكوتَ عليهِ وهو فضيلةٌ

    لغَطُ الحديثِ مَطيّةُ الإسفافِ

    They blamed his silence though it is a virtue

    Prattle is the mount of foolish excess

  49. صَمْتُ الهمام النجدِ أو إطراقُه

    خُطَبٌ مُجلْجِلَةٌ بِغير هُتافِ

    The silence of heroes and their brooding gaze

    Are momentous speeches without battle cries

  50. قولُ الفتَى من قلبهِ أو عقلهِ

    فإذا سَمَحْت فلا تَبعْ بِجُزافِ

    A youth's words come from his heart or mind

    So if your inner self permits, speak without haste

  51. حَسبُ الذي ألقَى اللجامَ لِسانُه

    ما جاء مِن زَجْرٍ بسورةِ قافِ

    It's enough for one who gave free rein to his tongue

    To curb it with "Qaf" and other deterrents

  52. خاضَ السياسةَ ملءُ جُعبتِه هَوى

    مصرَ ومَحوُ الظلمِ والإجحافِ

    He engaged in politics with passions full

    For Egypt, ending injustice and transgression

  53. ما كانَ في الجُلَّى بحابِسِ سَرجِه

    عَن هَوْلِها يَوْماً ولا وَقَّافِ

    Never, with his lofty aspirations fettered

    Showing fear of hazards on that road

  54. يَمضي ويتبعُه الشبابُ كما جرتْ

    جُرْدُ المذاكي في غُبَار خَصافِ

    He marched on and the youth followed as the trains

    Of meteors followed in the dust of a comet

  55. نادَى مُلِحّاً بِالجلاءِ مناجِزاً

    ماذا وراءَ الوعدِ والإخلافِ

    He called insistently for the British to leave

    Fulfilling his promise and his pact

  56. ودعَا بوادي النيلِ غيرَ مقَسَّمٍ

    سُودان مصرَ كشاطىءِ المُصطافِ

    And called in the Nile Valley undivided

    For Sudan and Egypt like the shores of one sea

  57. يا يومَ أمريكا وكم بكَ موقف

    أعيا النُّهىَ وبراعةَ الوصّافِ

    O day of America! How many times have you wept

    Frustrated by their ban, and the experts' dissembling!

  58. هِيَ صيحةٌ لم يَرْمِها مِنْ قَبلهِ

    بَطلٌ بوجه السادةِ الأحلافِ

    A cry never before unleashed by a hero

    In the face of gentlemen's leagues

  59. صَوتٌ إذا هزّ الأثيرَ جهيرُه

    فلَكم بمصرٍ هَزّ مِن أعطافِ

    A voice that shook the ether with its roar

    How much roaring has shaken Egypt's pillars!

  60. في كُلِّ أذنٍ مِنهُ شَنْفٌ زانَها

    ما أجملَ الآذانَ بالأشنافِ

    In every ear adorned by it is a glory -

    How beautiful are ears adorned with glories!

  61. أصغى له جمعُ الدهاةِ وأطرقوا

    شَتّان بين السمع والإنصافِ

    The arrogant crowd listened and bowed down

    What a gulf between listening and fairness!

  62. سَمِعوا بياناً عبقريّاً ما بِه

    في الحقِّ مِن شططٍ ولا إسرافِ

    They heard an ingenious, eloquent speech

    Neither extravagant nor extreme in truth

  63. وجدالَ وثّابِ البديهةِ ثابتٍ

    في يوم ملحمةٍ ويومِ ثِقافِ

    A warrior's decisive logic

    On a day of battle and a day of culture

  64. وصراحةً بهرت عيونَ رجالِهم

    لمّا بدتْ نُوراً بِلا أسدافِ

    Candor that dazzled his men's eyes

    As light appears without veils

  65. قالوا الرثاء فقلتُ دَمعُ محاجِري

    بحر وأنّات الحزين قوافي

    They pronounced the eulogy but I said: My tears'

    Flood and the grieving man's laments are poems

  66. شِعر مِنَ الذهب النُّضار حُروفه

    ولكم بسوقِ الشعر من زَيّافِ

    Whose golden, brilliant letters and words

    None in the poetry market could falsify

  67. محمودُ قد لقي المجاهدُ ربَّهُ

    في جنَّةِ النفحَاتِ والألطافِ

    Mahmoud the Mujahid has met his Lord

    In the Paradise of bliss and kindness

  68. نَمْ هَادِئاً إنَّ الغِراسَ وريفةٌ

    تُزهى بأكرم تُربةٍ وقِطافِ

    Sleep in peace, for saplings and meadows

    Are adorned with the finest soil and fruits

  69. وانزِلْ إلى مَثوى الصديق تَجد بهِ

    ما شِئتَ مِنْ حُبٍّ ومن إشرافِ

    And descend to your dear friend's abode; you will find

    Whatever you wish of love and nobility

  70. قَبرُ الشهيد سَماحةٌ فيَّاحةٌ

    ومَديدُ ظِلِّ حدائقٍ أَلفافِ

    A martyr's grave is serenity and life

    The extended shade of fragrant trees

  71. ما مَات مَن كتبَ الخلودُ رثاءَه

    ووشَى له حُللَ الثناءِ الضَّافي

    One whose elegy eternal glory inscribed

    Did not die, though goodbyes can be bitter

  72. حُيِّيتَ مِن مُزنِ العُيون بوابلٍ

    ومِنَ الحنانِ بِناعم رَفّافِ

    You are greeted by the most precious eyes with rain

    And the tenderest gentle welcome
