1. طائرٌ يشدو على فننِ

    جدَّد الذكرى لذي شجنِ

    A bird sings of arts

    Renewing the memory of one with sadness

  2. قام والأكوانُ صامتةٌ

    ونسيمُ الصُّبْحِ في وَهَنِ

    It rose while the universes were silent

    And the morning breeze was languid

  3. هاج في نفسي وقد هدأتْ

    لوعةً لولاه لم تكنِ

    It stirred in my soul though it was tranquil

    With a pain that wouldn't have been without it

  4. هزَّه شوقٌ إلى سكنٍ

    فبكى للأهل والسَّكَنِ

    Yearning shook it for a home

    So it wept for family and home

  5. وَيْكَ لا تجزعْ لنازلةٍ

    ما لطيرِ الجوِّ من وطنِ

    Don't fret little bird for an event

    The bird of the air has no home

  6. قد يراكَ الصُّبحُ في «حلبٍ»

    ويراكَ الليلُ في «عدنِ»

    Dawn may see you in Aleppo

    And night may see you in Aden

  7. أنتَ في خضراءَ ضاحكةٍ

    من بكاءِ العارضِ الهَتِنِ

    You're amidst laughing greens

    From the tears of a coquettish cloud

  8. أنتَ في شجراءَ وارفةٍ

    تاركٌ غصناً إلى غصن

    You're amidst shaded trees

    Leaving a branch for another

  9. عابثٌ بالزَّهرِ مغتبطٌ

    ناعمٌ في الحِلّ والظَّعَن

    Frolicking with flowers, joyful

    Gentle in shade and sun

  10. في ظلالٍ حولها نَهَرٌ

    غيرُ مسنونٍ ولا أَسِن

    In shades around which a river flows

    Neither dammed nor obstructed

  11. في يديكَ الريحُ تُرسلها

    كيفما تهوى بلا رسن

    In your hands the wind you direct

    However you wish without stop

  12. يا سليمانَ الزمانِ أفقْ

    ليس للّذات من ثمن

    Wake up Suleiman of time

    The self has no price

  13. وابعثِ الألحانَ مطربةً

    يا حياةَ العينِ والأُذن

    Send the melodies singing

    Oh life of the eye and ear

  14. غَنِّ بالدنيا وزينتِها

    ونظامِ الكونِ والسُّنَن

    Sing of the world and its beauty

    Of the universe's order and laws

  15. وبقيعانٍ هبطتَ بها

    وبما شاهدتَ من مُدُن

    Of the valleys you descended in

    And cities you saw

  16. وبأزهار الصباحِ وقد

    نهضتْ من غفوة الوسن

    Of dawn's flowers as they

    Rose from the sleep of night

  17. وبقلب شفَّه وَلَهٌ

    حافظٍ للعهد لم يَخُن

    Of a heart whose love

    Keeps true to the pact, unbetraying

  18. كلُّ شيءٍ في الدُّنا حَسَنٌ

    أيُّ شيءٍ ليس بالحسن؟

    Everything in the world is beautiful

    What is there not beautiful?

  19. خالقُ الأكوان كالئُها

    واسعُ الإحسانِ والمنن

    Creator of the universes, all His creation

    Vast in kindness and blessing

  20. كان لي إلفٌ فأَبعدهُ

    قَدَرٌ عنّي وأبعدني

    I had a beloved whom fate

    Took from me and took me from

  21. أنا مَدَّ الدهرِ أذكرهُ

    وهو مَدَّ الدهرِ يذكرني

    I, time's length, remember him

    He, time's length, remembers me

  22. قد بنينا العشَّ من مُهجٍ

    غُسِلتْ من حَوْبة الدَّرَن

    We built a nest of passion

    Washed clean of the stains of time

  23. من لَدُنْهُ الودُّ أَخلَصَهُ

    والوفا والطهرُ من لَدُنِي

    His love was most sincere

    As was my loyalty and purity

  24. كانتِ الأطيارُ تحسدهُ

    جنَّةَ المأوى وتحسدني

    Birds envied him

    The paradise of dwelling and envied me

  25. وظنَنَّا أنْ نعيش بهِ

    عيشةَ المستعصمِ الأَمِن

    We thought to live in it

    A life safe like al-Musta`sim's days

  26. فرمتْ كفُّ الزمان بهِ

    فكأنَّ العُشَّ لم يكن

    But time's hand cast him away

    As if the nest never was

  27. طار من حولي وخلّفني

    للجوى والبثّ والحَزَن

    He flew from around me leaving me

    To yearning, confusion, and grief

  28. ونأى عنّي وما برحتْ

    نازعاتُ الشَّوق تطرقني

    And withdrew from me while still

    Yearnings of passion keep striking me

  29. ومضى والوجدُ يسبقهُ

    ودموعُ العين تسبقني

    And he left while ardour precedes him

    And my tears precede me

  30. إنْ تزرْ يا طيرُ دوحتَهُ

    بين زهرٍ ناضرٍ وجَنِي

    If you visit his abode bird

    Among blooming and ripening fruits

  31. وشهدتَ «التِّمْسَ» مُضطرباً

    واثباً كالصافن الأَرِن

    And see al-Timsah agitated

    Leaping like frightened horses

  32. عبثتْ ريحُ الشمال بهِ

    فطغى غيظاً على السُّفن

    The north wind toyed with it

    Raging at the ships

  33. فانشُدِ الأطيارَ واحدَها

    في الحُلَى والحُسن والجَدَن

    Sing to the birds altogether

    Of beauty, charm, and grace

  34. وتريَّثْ في المقال لهُ

    قد يكون الموتُ في اللَّسَن!

    And speak gently for death

    May lie in tongues

  35. صِفْ له يا طيرُ ما لقيتْ

    مُهجتِي في الحبّ من غَبَن

    Describe my passion's trials

    And the pains my body narrowed around

  36. صفْ له روحاً مُعذَّبةً

    ضاق عن آلامها بدني

    Describe weeping eyes

    That didn't protect from copious tears

  37. صفْ له عيناً مُقرَّحةً

    لأبيِّ الدمعِ لم تَصُن

    O my friend, love brings distress

    May God not afflict you with distress

  38. يا خليلي والهوى إِحَنٌ

    لا رماكَ اللهُ بالإحَن

    If you see the eye sleeping

    Watch for the awakening of strife!

  39. إنْ رأيتَ العينَ ناعسةً

    فترقّبْ يقظةَ الفِتَن!

    Or if you see the stature veiled

    Take whatever madness you wish

  40. أو رأيتَ القَدَّ في هَيَفٍ

    فاتّخذْ ما شئتَ من جُنَن

    We enjoyed love a time

    And suffered at the end of time!

  41. قد نعمنا بالهوى زمناً

    وشقينا آخرَ الزمن!
