لقد ضَمَّتِ الأثراءُ منك مُرَزّأً

عظيمَ رَمَادِ النارِ مُشْتَرَكَ القِدْرِ

The wealthy have gained much advantage from you,

Ashes of a great fire shared by all.

إذا قلتَ لم تترك مقالاً لقائل

وإن صُلْتَ كنتَ اللَيْثَ تحمي حِمَى الأجر

If you speak, you leave no words for others.

If you are reconciled, you are a lion protecting its territory.

حليماً إذا ما الحِلمُ كان حَزامَةً

وقوفاً إذا كان الوقوفُ على الجمر

Forebearing when forbearance is a belt,

Standing firm when standing firm is on embers.

ليبكِيكَ من كانت حياتُك عِزّهُ

وأصبح لَمَّا مُتّ يُغْضي على الصُّغْر

Wept over by those whose life was your glory,

And who, when you died, weep for lost youth.

سقى الأرضَ ذاتَ الطُول والعرض مُثْجِمُ

أَحَمُّ الذرى واهي العُرى دائمُ القطْر

He watered the long and wide earth, eyes overflowing,

Hotter than creatures but cooler than constantly pouring rain.

وما بِيَ سُقْيَا الأرضِ لكنَّ تُرْبَةً

أَضَلَكَ في أحشائها مَلْحَدُ القبْر

Not to water the earth was I, but earth

That confused you in its belly, the grave's ditch.
