Listen to my complaint, and be gentle
With a body that, for your sake, has grown gaunt.
And tell me: who declared my blood lawful?
And who is it that forbade kisses?
And if you deny my body’s wasting
And do not soften toward me, nor—
Then hold back the arrows from your eyes;
Some of what those two have done is enough.
And do not show us your cheeks—
The roses of their dew-drenched gardens.
