1. حتّام أكتمُ ما الدّموعُ تُبيحُ

    وإلامَ أغدو مُغرماً وأروحُ

    I conceal what tears reveal

    Else I become enamored and wander

  2. وإلى متَى أصبو إلى ريح الصِّبا

    ومُهِيجُ نار جوايَ تِلك الريحُ

    And how long do I aspire to the zephyr of youth

    And the blaze of my passion - that zephyr fans?

  3. ومُعنّفٍ نَحو الملامةِ جانحٍ

    لو كانَ لي نحو السلوِّ جنوحُ

    And blame myself, inclined to blame,

    If only towards tranquility I gravitated!

  4. يُملي عَلى مَن ليس يسمعُ قولَهُ

    في الحبّ قولاً كله مطروحُ

    He dictates to one who hears not his words -

    In love, words completely discarded.

  5. ومُعذّبي من لا أبوحُ بذكره

    ويكاد يعميني الهوى فأبوحُ

    And tortures me - I dare not mention him

    Passion blinds me and I confess!

  6. مَن لو رآه البدرُ قال مخاطباً

    أنت المليحُ وما سواكَ مَليحُ

    One whom if the full moon saw, it would say "You are the beautiful one, and none other is beautiful!"

    Intoxicated with pure wine in his hand

  7. نشوان من خمر الرّضابِ لِقدِّهِ

    منها غبوقٌ دائماً وصَبُوحُ

    Ever brimming, overflowing in his cup

    I gave him my soul and wealth, seeking

  8. أعطيتُه رُوحي ومالي طَالباً

    لِلْوَصْلِ وهو بما طلبتُ شحيحُ

    Union - yet in what I sought, he was stingy.

    And whenever I complained of passion, he said "Be patient"

  9. ومَتَى شكوتُ له الْهوى قالَ اصْطَبِرْ

    فالصَّبرُ فيه لِذي الهوى تَرويحُ

    For patience for the passionate is comfort.

    I am tasked with beautiful patience in passion

  10. أمكلّفي صَبراً جَميلاً في الْهوى

    تَكْليفُ ما لاَ يُستطَاعُ قبيحُ

    A task impossible to accomplish!

    Be gentle with a body whose soul you have taken

  11. أرفقْ بجسْمٍ أنتَ سالبُ روحِهِ

    أيَعيشُ جِسْمٌ فَارقتْه الرّوحُ

    Can a body live when the soul has abandoned it?

    Look at my heart for you, and my watching eyes

  12. وانظْرْ إلى قلبي عليك وناظري

    هذا قَريحُ هوىً وذاكَ جريحُ

    This a heart broken by love, that wounded.

    Ask the tears about my love - it is laid bare

  13. وَسل المدامعَ عَنْ غرامي فَهْو في

    مَتْنِ الخدودِ بمدمعي مَشروحُ

    Upon my cheeks by my weeping.

    If you will not visit me, to revive

  14. إنْ لاَ تكُنْ لي زورةٌ تَحْيي بها

    روحي فموتٌ مِنْ هواك مُريحُ

    My soul, then death from your love brings peace.

    Long live the living in the days of separation, for you

  15. حيّاً الحَيَا زمَن الغُوَيْرِ وأنتَ لي

    بالقُربِ منكَ وبالوصالِ سَموحُ

    Are near, and in union I find delight.

    For I fear not those who blame and say

  16. إذْ لا أَخافُ الكاشحين وقولهم

    هذَا الفتى المسْتَهتَرُ المفْضوحُ

    "This reckless, disgraced lad!"

    O you who blame me! I am the one you said -

  17. يا عاذِلينَ أنا الّذي قَد قُلْتمُ

    فاغْدوا هُبِلْتُم في الملام وروحوا

    So be gone! Blame yourselves and depart!

    We stood for farewell in the lightning flashes

  18. ولَقدْ وقفْنا لِلْوداعِ ببارقٍ

    إذ بارقُ البَينِ المظِلِّ يلوحُ

    When parting's darkness flashed.

    Naught but tears pouring down

  19. إذ ليس إلاّ مدمعٌ مُتَدَفّقٌ

    إثر الهوادح أو دمٌ مسفوحُ

    After the darkness, or blood spilt.

    We knew not if those souls were mirages

  20. لم ندرِ هَلْ تلكَ النّفوسُ ذَوائباً

    أَم أدمعٌ فوقَ الخدودِ تَسيحُ

    Or tears flowing over cheeks.

    In Babylon, the valleys quenched Babylon

  21. وببابلٍ سَقَتِ الغوادي بابلاً

    مُلقىً بآثارِ الخيام طريحُ

    Abandoned among the ruins of encampments.

    Hearing the drivel though it was nonsense

  22. سَمِيعَ الصَّبابةَ وهْي حقاً باطِلٌ

    وعَصَى النصيحَ وإنّه لَنصيحُ

    And disobeying advice though it was sincere.

    Certain of passion's tyranny, and that what

  23. مُتَيقّناً جورَ الغَرامِ وأَنّ مَا

    يُرْوَى عَن المقَلِ المراضِ صَحيحُ

    Is conveyed from the lovesick is genuine.

    His expressions conveyed what was within him

  24. قد عَبَّرتْ عَبراتُه عمّا بهِ

    إنّ الْهوى تَلويحُه تَصريحُ

    Truly passion's hints are explicit!

    It conversed with him in discourses of love

  25. أَضْحى يُحدّثه أحاديثَ الهوى

    عَنْهُمْ خُزامى بابلٍ والشَيخُ

    Of the Khuzam tribe of Babylon and their Shaykh.

    My heart was restless as if a glance arose in it

  26. قَلقَ الفؤاد كأنّما هبَت لَهُ

    طرفٌ إلى نَيل الفخار طموحُ

    Yearning to attain the pride of pottery.

    A people resembling the moon when it shines with

  27. خَلْقٌ يحاكي البَدْرَ حين يلوحُ مَعْ

    خُلُقٍ يحاكي الزهر حينَ يفوحُ

    A nature resembling the flower when it diffuses fragrance.

    One who, if the darkness of afflictions descends, his

  28. مَن إنْ دجَتْ ظُلَمُ النّوائب حلِّها

    رأيٌ له في المشكلاتِ رجيحُ

    Opinion in difficulties is weighty.

    A reproach that surpasses all praise

  29. ندبٌ يجلّ عن المدائح كلّها

    لو أنّ شعر العَالَمين مَديحُ

    Even if the poetry of both worlds were praise.

    And if people point towards a dark-skinned one

  30. وإذا أشار النّاسُ نحوَ مُسوّدٍ

    فهو المشارُ إليه والملْموحُ

    He is the one indicated, the one hinted at.

    Courageous, meeting misfortunes with resolve

  31. شَهمٌ يلاقي النّائبات بعزْمَةٍ

    تدعُ الشوامخ وهي بيدٌ فِيحُ

    That humbles the lofty when gripped.

    And virtues none before attained, they became

  32. وفضائلٌ ما حازَها أحدٌ غَدتْ

    ولها على شمسِ النّهار وضوحُ

    Evident, shining upon the sun.

    And freshness, as if the clouds had poured forth behind him -

  33. وندىً كما انهلّ الغمامُ ورآءه

    نسبٌ كما انشقّ الصبَّاح صريحُ

    Lineage, as if dawn had burst through.

    The literati pass around the pearls of his poetry

  34. يتناقَلُ الأُدباء دُرَّ قريضِهَ

    فكأنّه التّهليل والتَّسبيحُ

    As if it were glorification and prayer.

    O most eloquent of orators, without contention,

  35. يا أفصحَ الفُصحاء غيرَ مُدافعٍ

    أقْلِلْ لِمثلكَ أن يُقالَ فصيحُ

    Deeming the like of you "eloquent" is scarce fitting!

    For you are the jewel in the crown of literature

  36. إذ أنتَ للأُدباء درةُ تاجها

    بل أنتَ في جسدِ المعالي روحُ

    Indeed, you are its soul embodied!

    Take them as the blossoms of the Judas tree smiled

  37. خُذْها كما ابتَسَمتْ أزاهرُ أيكةٍ

    قد زانها التَّهذيبُ والتَنقيحُ

    Adorned by refinement and editing.

    Charming, drawing hearts with charm -

  38. غرّاء تَجْتَلبُ القلوبَ غرابةٌ

    لِمَ لاَ وأنتَ بِدُرِّها الممدوحُ

    Why not, and you are its praiseworthy full moon!

    I complain to you of great anguish redoubled

  39. أشكو عظيم جَوىً إليكَ مُضَاعفاً

    لي من سَمومِ سُمُومِه تَلْويحُ

    In me by its venoms' envenoming.

    And the turns of fate, O son of Ahmed, that

  40. وصروفَ دهرٍ يا بنَ أحمد لم يَزَلْ

    يبدو لهنَّ تَجهّمٌ وكلوحُ

    Glower upon them and scowl.

    So send your poem as a charm to revive

  41. فابعَثْ قريضك رقْيَةً يَحْيى بها

    قلبي فَقَد أودى بهِ التَّبريحُ

    My heart, for renunciation has destroyed it!
