1. ولم أنسَ إذ زارتْ وسادي وقد غدا

    عليها من اللّيل البهيم لَبوسُ

    When she visited my pillow, and the savage night

    Had donned upon it the garb of gloom,

  2. على حين أودَى بي أليمُ صدودها

    وبي من تباريح الغرام رسيسُ

    While her cruel separation left me in pain,

    And the pangs of passion stirred me;

  3. فبتْنا بأَهْنَا العيشِ في ذمة الدُّجى

    لنا من أحاديث الغرام دروسُ

    We spent the night in sweet intimacy, under cover of darkness,

    Deriving lessons of love from our conversations;

  4. تغازلني منها عيون مريضةٌ

    تُسَلّ قلوبٌ دونها ونفوسُ

    Languishing eyes gazed at me,

    Melting hearts and souls;

  5. وليسَ لنا غير الرّضاب مدامةٌ

    ولا غير لمياء الشفاة كؤوسُ

    We had only wine glasses for companions,

    And lips wet with wine for cups;

  6. فمِنْ لَثْمِ ثغرٍ كاللآلي مُنَضَّدٍ

    إلى ضمِّ قَدٍّ كالقناةِ يميسُ

    From a juicy mouth like a ruby,

    To an embrace like a silver jug;

  7. ونحْسُو مداماً ما رأتْ كفَّ عَاصرٍ

    ولا كدّرتْها بالمزاجِ قسوسُ

    We drank the wine that no censorious eye had seen,

    Nor any bigot could trouble;

  8. ليالي لا شيبُ المفَارِقِ ضاحكٌ

    عليا ولا وجه الزَّمان عبوسُ

    Nights where separation brought no gray hair,

    Nor did the face of time frown;

  9. وحق على أَهلِ الصبَّابة طاعتي

    فإنّي فيهم ما علمتُ رئيسُ

    And I have a right to command the wine pourers -

    For among them I knew no chief but myself.
