وسلوا دارَهُم أينَ استَقرَّ فَرِيقُها

وأَيّ فلاةٍ كانَ فيها طَريقُها

They asked about their home, where her group settled

And which wilderness was her path in it

سقَاها الحيَا مِنْ أَرْبُع ومَنازلٍ

لَهوتُ بها إذ ليسَ غيري طروقُها

Life watered it from four lodgings

I sported with it when no other was my intimate but it

إذ العيشُ ريّان المعاطفِ أخضرٌ

ولم تَذوِ مِنْ دَوْحات لَهْوي عروقُها

When life was sleek, cloaks green

And its veins of madness not yet drained

لقَدْ رَحَلوا مِنها الغَداةَ وخلَّفوا

حشاشة قَلْب لَيْسَ يَهْدا خفوقُها

They left it one morning and left behind

A tumultuous heart that cannot be calmed

خليليَّ قد أبرَمْتما إذ عَذَلْتُما

وكَلّفتماني خُطَّةً لا أطيقُها

O my two friends, you have conspired, since you blamed me

And tasked me with what I cannot bear

تَرومانِ أنْ تسلو عن الحُبِ مُهجتي

أَيحسنُ من بعدِ الوفاءِ عقوقُها

You want to ask about love from my downcast self

Can one be unfaithful after loyalty?

وغيرُ سواءٍ يا خليليَّ فاعْلَما

مقَيّد نفسٍ في الْهوى وطَليقُها

It is not equal, my two friends, know

A soul bound by love, another set free

أَلا في سبيل الحُبّ مهجةُ وامقٍ

إذا لاحَ برقُ الأَبرقين يُسوقُها

But for love, the downcast soul of a lover

When lightning of his love flashed, driving it

وغيداء يُسبي الغُصنَ لينُ قوامِها

ويفضحُ شمسَ الأُفقِ نوراً شروقُها

A bending branch that captivates, its soft body

And the rising sun exposes its light to the horizon

سقَتْني على أُولي الشَّبيبةَ والصِّبا

كؤوسَ هوىً ما خلتُ أنّي أذوقُها

It made me drink in my first youth and prime

Cups of love that I never ceased to sip
