1. الحمد للّه نلنا السؤلَ والأربا

    وأذْهَبَ اللهُ عَنّا الهمَّ والنَصبا

    Praise be to Allah, we attained questions and responses,

    And Allah has removed from us anxiety and hardship.

  2. بالْعَودِ من ناعطٍ لا كان من بلدٍ

    نِلنا العناء به والهمَّ والكُربا

    With the return of Na'at, though he was not from a land,

    We attained fatigue with him, and anxiety and sorrow.

  3. متى أرى ناعطاً دونَ البلادِ وقد

    أذكى سَنا البرق في أحشائِها لَهَبا

    When will I see Na'at, beyond the lands, while

    The lightning has ignited fires in its depths?

  4. لا ينظر المرؤ منهُ قَصْدَ ناحيةٍ

    إلاّ رأى منه أو من أهلِه عَجَبا

    A man cannot look towards any direction of it

    Except he sees wonders from it or its people.

  5. قومٌ لَهُمْ خلَقٌ تَشْقى العيونُ بِها

    سودُ المعارف لا عُجْماً ولا عربا

    A people, for them is a nature that eyes suffer with,

    Black in lineage, neither non-Arab nor Arab.

  6. وقد وجدتَ مكانَ القول ذا سعةٍ

    فقُلْ بما شِئتَ لا زوراً ولا كَذبا

    And you have found the place of speech spacious,

    So say what you wish, neither falsehood nor lies.

  7. وَقِفْ أبثكَ بَعضاً مِنْ عجائبه

    واسْمعْ فعندي منهُ لِلسَّميع نبا

    Pause, speak some of its wonders,

    And listen - with me for the listener is news.

  8. جُزنا به والشِّتا مُلْقٍ كلاكِلَهُ

    والبردُ من فوقه قد شقّق الحُجُبا

    We were sheltered with it while the winter pouring down its hail,

    And the cold from above it has torn the veils.

  9. في ليلةٍ من جمادى ذات أنديةٍ

    لا ينظر المرؤ من ظلمائها الطُّنبا

    In a night of Jumada, one with calls,

    A man cannot see from its darkness a fibre.

  10. لا يَنْبحُ الكلبُ فيها غيرَ واحدةٍ

    حتّى يلفّ خيشومِهِ الذّنبا

    No dog barks in it except once,

    Until it wraps its snout with its tail.

  11. قد نشّر الجوُّ رايات الرّياح بهِ

    وأرسَل القُرّ فيهِ عَسْكراً لجبا

    The air has unfurled the flags of winds in it,

    And sent in it an army of violent winds.

  12. وشنَّ غاراته حتّى أثار بهِ

    حرباً ضروساً تثير الويلَ والحَرَبا

    And launched its raids until it stirred in it

    A fierce war that brings ruin and havoc.

  13. وغيّم النّقعُ مِن ركضِ الرياح بهِ

    حتّى تقنّع منه الجوّ وانتقبا

    And the torrential rain has clouded from the galloping of winds,

    Until the air covers itself from it and dons the cloak.

  14. واسْتقبَلَتْ خِيَم الأَجناد جاهدة

    في كَسْرِ كل عمودٍ كان منُتصبا

    And the army tents steadfastly faced

    Breaking every pillar that was erected.

  15. وأطفأتْ كلّ نارٍ في الخيام فلّو

    أن الجحيمَ يلاقي بردَها لَخَبا

    And extinguished every fire in the tents, so

    If Hell met its coldness, it would perish.

  16. والخيلُ خاشعةُ الأَبصارِ خاضعةٌ

    لا تستطيع لما قد نالَهَا هَرَبا

    And the horses, downcast, submissive,

    Cannot find strength for what has befallen them to flee.

  17. ما يَطْرحُونَ لها في الأرض من عَلَفٍ

    إلاّ وراحَ بأيدي الريح مُنْتَهَبَا

    Whatever fodder they throw for them on the ground

    The wind snatches away before their hands can grasp it.

  18. وكلُّ شخص صريعٌ لا يطيقُ قوى

    قد لَفّتِ الريحُ منه الرأسَ والرّكبَا

    And every person is incapacitated, unable to muster strength,

    The wind having wrapped from him both head and leg.

  19. أمّا الطّعامَ فمثل الماءِ في عَدمٍ

    لا نَستطيعُ له في حالةٍ طلبا

    As for the food, it is like the water in absence,

    We cannot seek it in any condition.

  20. ظللتُ أبكي ربيعاً في جوانبهِ

    حزناً وأنشدُ في أرجائِه رجَبَا

    I remained weeping for spring in its expanses,

    Sorrowfully, and seeking refuge in its areas.

  21. وقلتُ للرّكْب هبّوا لاَ أبا لكُم

    قد جاء ما وعَد الرحمن واقتربا

    And I said to the caravan, come, no escape for you,

    What the Merciful promised has come and drawn near.

  22. فاسمعْ لِشيءٍ يسيرٍ من عجائب لا

    تُحْصَى ومن يدّعي حصراً فقد كذبا

    So listen to something small of wonders that cannot

    Be counted, and whoever claims to limit them has lied.
