1. أَشهدٌ أتاني من نظامك أم خمرُ

    بفيّ برودٌ وهو في كبدي جمرُ

    Is it a system ordained or wine

    That came to me with a refreshing chill yet burns within?

  2. زواهرُ أفقٍ أم أزاهرُ روضةٍ

    أم الدرّ هاتيك العقود أمِ السحرُ

    Horizons’ flowers or a garden’s blooms,

    Are these necklaces pearls or sorcery?

  3. طوتْ خبرَ الطّائيّ حين نشرتَها

    برقّتها يا حبّذا الطيُّ والنشرُ

    You folded the news of longing when you unfurled it -

    How excellent the folding and unfolding!

  4. فيا ما أحيلاها عروس بلاغةٍ

    تجلّت فحبّاتُ القلوب لها مهرُ

    O what a beautiful bride of eloquence -

    Her lovely words make hearts her dowry.

  5. وغيداء لا ترض النجوم قلائداً

    وتأنفُ أن الشمس في أذنها شذرُ

    A doe who disdains the stars as necklaces

    And scorns the sun’s beads upon her ear.

  6. تحاكي الصَّبا لطفاً وزهر الرُّبَى شذى

    وتفعلُ بالألباب ما يفعل الخمرُ

    She rivals the gentle breeze, the meadow’s fragrance,

    And works upon minds what wine works.

  7. أجاد معانيها ووشّى برودَهَا

    فتىً ماجدٌ أضحى به يفخر الدهرُ

    A glorious youth endowed it with profound meanings

    And adorned it, pride of all eras.

  8. رقيق حواشي النظم والبارع الذي

    غدتْ غرّةً لِلدّهرِ أيامُه الغُرُّ

    Delicate is the prose and unique the one

    Whose days became the century's bride.

  9. تحكّم في فنِّ البلاغة فاغتدى

    لَه في المعاني الصَّعبةِ النهيُ والأمرُ

    He mastered rhetoric's art and grew bold

    To forbid and command in difficult themes.

  10. وكم من عروض قال يشهد

    أنّه الخليل وبحرٍ شاهدٌ أنه البحرُ

    How many metres bear witness

    That he is Al-Khalil and the sea testifies he's the sea.
