أتُعَزّي في المُصاب
أم تُهَنّي بالثّوابِ
Shall I console myself for this affliction,
Or congratulate you on the reward?
وأرى ثانيهما أَدنى
إلى نهج الصَّواب
And I see the latter as closer
To the path of righteousness.
فاحتسِبْ بالقادم الرّاحل
ذخراً في الحسابِ
So reckon the departing visitor
As provision in the account.
وتلقّ الخطب إن جلَّ
بصبرٍ واحتسابِ
And accept events, however grave,
With patience and reckoning.
واغنمِ الزّلفَة ممَّنْ
عندهُ حسنُ المآبَ
And take advantage of the favor
Of the one whose outcome is good.
ليس غير الله يخلُو
من نَفادٍ وذهابِ
None but God is without
Decline and passing away.
والّليالي لم تزل فاعلَم
بِنا نَفادٍ وذهابِ
And the nights - know that
We have decline and passing away.
ويحها كم خَدَعَتنا
بسرابٍ كالشراب
Oh how often it has deceived us
With a mirage like drink!
لَم تزل في الخلق تأتي
كلّ خلقٍ بعجاب
It never ceases to bring wonders
To every period.
لَمْ تَدعْ ذَا لِمَشِيبٍ
لاَ ولا ذا لِشباب
It left none for old age - no! -
Nor for youth.
لا ولا تردعها سَطوة
ذي البأس المهابِ
Nor does its tyranny deter it,
However terrible and fearsome.
هل ترى فيها نعيماً
صفوهُ غير مُشاب
Do you see in it any pure bliss
Unmixed with trials?
أم سُروراً لم تَكَدِّره
بحزنٍ واكتِئابِ
Or joy not marred
By sorrow and depression?
كم غَدتْ تضربُ في
الناسِ بسيفٍ غير نابَى
How often it lashes out
At the people with an unrelenting sword!
ليس ترضى غيرَ أرواحِ
البرايا من قِرابِ
It is not content save with the lives
Of innocents for sacrifice.
كَمْ أذالَتْ من مصونٍ
وأزّالت من حجاب
How much guarded chastity it has despoiled
And how many veils rent!
ولَكَمْ فلَّتْ حساماً
وأذلّتْ ليث غابِ
And how many swords it has unsheathed
And how many lions tamed!
يقتل الأبطالَ من غيرِ
طعانٍ وضراب
It slays heroes without
A spear thrust or blow.
كم همامٍ قاهرِ السَّطوةِ
عضَّتْه بناب
How many proud men, conquerors in battle,
Have been felled by its tooth!
أزعجتْهُ لِفراقٍ
غيرَ مرجّوِ الإِيابِ
It has distressed them with a separation
Not hoped to be reversed.
ومليك تركتهُ
رهنَ أطباق التراب
And how many a king it has left
A captive in the earth's embrace!
يتشكّى الضيقَ من بعدِ
المقاصير الرّحابِ
He complains of straits after
Expansive quarters.
قَدْ غَدَا أَبكمَ لا
يُمكنُهُ رَجْع الجوابِ
Now he has been struck dumb, unable
To return an answer.
سامِعاً غيرَ مجيبٍ
داعياً غيرَ مُجابِ
Hearing, unresponding; called, unanswered;
And palaces it left
وقصورٍ تَركتها
بينَ أهليها يبابِ
Amid their households wailing.
Equal in prohibition and death
وسواءٌ في النّهى والموت
طَوْقٌ في الرقاب
Are serf and overlord.
A corpse wrapped in its shroud
ميّتٌ يُدرج في الكفنِ
وحيٌّ في الثيابِ
And a living man in robes.
And in every affliction we have
ولنا بالمصْطَفى المختار
في كلِّ مُصَابِ
Muhammad the chosen as comfort.
And his family - through whom I hope
وبنيهم من بهم أَرجو
أماني من عذابي
For safety from my torment.
My intercessors on the day I am called forth
شُفعائي يوم حشري
حين أدْعَى لِكتابي
When I am summoned before the record.
An exemplar leading to the best
أسوةٌ تُفضي إلى
خيرِ نعيمٍ وثوابِ
Of bliss and reward.
