My eyes shed tears of sorrow for you

Though they've committed no sin or wrong

O you whom love seemed beautiful for

Even if in another it'd be ugly

You who contained perfection beyond all

Till beauty became as you wished and designed

No harm if the Master allowed a visit

To a lovesick soul who wholly resigned

Your beauty enviers tried to hide

They saw a crescent, but it was dawn's sunshine

By God if my enviers could but see

Your branch's peak, the difference would shine

Add to my soul more sparks or sleeplessness to my eyes

And to my bones, more emaciation and bewilderment

I who never complained of love's heaviness

Nor moaned when it flamed, keeping silent restraint
