1. فراقكُمُ هَاجَ اشتياقي وأشجاني

    وأغرى جفوني بالسّهادِ وأشجاني

    Your separation stirred my yearning and sorrows

    And tempted my eyelids with sleeplessness and sorrows

  2. وأبدَى سقامي فيكمُ ما كَتمتُهُ

    وعَبَّر شأني في الصَّبابةِ عَن شاني

    And revealed my illness in you I had concealed

    And expressed my state openly in my youth about my affair

  3. وهَيْهات أَن يخفَى الّذي بي من الهوى

    وسرُّ غرامي بعْدكم مِثْل إعلاني

    Alas! That which I have of love cannot be hidden

    And the secret of my passion after you is like my declaration

  4. أَأَحبابَنا حتّى مَتى وإلى مَتَى

    أُرَى ذاكراً بالغَيب مَن ظلّ ينساني

    O beloveds! How long, to when

    Will I remember in absence those who forgot me?

  5. ألا عطفةً بالوصْلِ منكم لِمُغْرمٍ

    أسير الجوى صَادي الجوانح حرّانِ

    Won’t you show kindness in union, to a lover

    Prisoner of passion, restless, burning?

  6. بما بينَنا مِن حُرمةِ الودِّ والهوى

    وعقد الإخا فكّوا أَسيركم العاني

    By the sanctity of love and affection between us

    And the pact of brotherhood, release your captive in distress

  7. تخذْتكمُ دونَ الأنام أحبّةٌ

    وعاصيتُ فيكم كلّ من ظلَّ يلْحاني

    I have taken you above all people as beloveds

    And disobeyed in you all who kept blaming me

  8. فكيفَ سمعتم ما روتهُ حواسدي

    وقالوه من زُورٍ عليَّ وبُهتانِ

    So how did you hear what my enviers rumored

    And said falsely about me, slandering me?

  9. ووالله ما رمتُ التبدّلَ عنْكمُ

    ولا مرّ لي في القلب خاطر سلوان

    By God, I never intended to change from you

    And the idea to forget you never crossed my heart

  10. وإن التسليّ والتبدل عنكم

    لأمران في دين الغرام أمرَّان

    To forget and change from you

    Are two matters in the religion of passion, reprehensible

  11. وعاهدتموني بالعقيقِ على الهوى

    فأينَ مواثيقي ترون وإيماني

    You promised me loyalty in love

    So where are my pacts, you see, and my faith?

  12. ولي فيكمُ يومَ الوداع مُهَفْهَفٌ

    جفاني فأغْرى بالمدامع أجفاني

    I had a friend at farewell

    Whose eyes flowed with tears, wetting my eyes

  13. كَلفْتُ بهِ إذ صار في الحسن واحداً

    فلم يُثنني عَن حُبّه أبداً ثاني

    I was burdened with one whose beauty was unmatched

    So nothing made me forget him ever again

  14. وعنّفني مَنْ لم يذقْ كأسَ صبوتي

    ولا باتَ ذا قلب كقَلبيَ وَلْهانِ

    He who hasn't tasted my cup of infatuation blamed me

    And didn't spend the night with a heart like mine, tormented

  15. عفا الله عمنْ لامني لو رأى الذي

    كلفت به يوم العقيق لأعفاني

    May God pardon whoever blamed me, if he but saw

    What I was burdened with the day of loyalty, he would pardon me

  16. غزال كأنّ الله صوّرَ خلْقَهُ

    من النيِّرات الزّهر في شكل إنسانِ

    A gazelle whose form God has shaped

    From delicate blossoms in the image of a man

  17. يميسُ بقدٍّ يحسدُ الغُصْنَ لينَهُ

    ويبسم عن درِّ نضيدٍ ومرجانِ

    Who walks with a soft grace that makes the branch envy its pliancy

    And smiles with teeth like pearls and coral

  18. وفي خدّه وردٌ جنيٌّ قطافهُ

    ولكنّ سيف اللحظ يجني على الجاني

    On his cheek is rose so freshly plucked

    But the sword of a glance harvests the gatherer

  19. أروم لقاهُ ثم أخشى رقيبَهُ

    فآخذُ عنهُ جانباً حين يلقاني

    I want to meet him but fear his watcher

    So I take his side when he faces me

  20. أتاني هواهُ بعد تركيَ لِلْهوى

    فاذكرني ما الدَّهر من قبل أنساني

    His love came to me after I had left passion

    So remember me before life makes me forget people

  21. إلى الله أشكو ظالمين تَعَاهدا

    عليَّ وكانا أصل همّي وأحزاني

    To God I complain of two oppressors who conspired against me

    And were the source of my worries and sorrows

  22. هوىً ضقتُ ذرعاً عن تحمّل بعضه

    ودهراً عن الهادي بن أحمد أقصاني

    A passion whose hardship I can no longer withstand

    And a time that keeps me far from Al-Haadi ibn Ahmad

  23. فتى المجد والعلياء من صار مُجْمِعاً

    على فَضْلِه قاصي البريّةِ والداني

    The young man of glory and nobility, the one

    Whose superiority both far and near unanimously acknowledged

  24. فتىً ألْقَتِ الآدابُ طوعاً لِفكِرِهِ

    مقاليدَ تَسْليم إليه وإذْعانِ

    A young man whom knowledge willingly surrendered

    The keys to its submission and compliance

  25. فتىً مدّ لِلإحسانِ باعَ مبرّزٍ

    فلم يَخْتَلِفْ في فَضْل سُؤددِه اثنانِ

    A young man who extended the hand of generosity

    So none differed on the merit of his benevolence

  26. فتىً ورثَ العلياء عَنْ خيرِ سادةٍ

    مراجيح أَحْلامٍ مساميح غُرّانِ

    A young man who inherited from the best of chieftains

    Sublime dreams, splendid steeds

  27. فتىً سادَ قبل الحُلْم أبناءَ جنْسِه

    وشاد لِرَبْع المجد أرفعَ بُنْيانِ

    A young man who excelled the youth of his kind before maturity

    And built the highest edifice for the glory of his people

  28. أخو نَجْدةٍ إن يُدعَ لِلْبأسِ والفِدى

    فلا عاجزٌ تلقاهُ ثمَّ ولا وَاني

    A brother of Al-Najda if called for valor and sacrifice

    Then no coward will face him, nor will he waver

  29. حوى قَصبَات السَّبقْ طفلاً ونَاشِئاً

    وبذَ الأعالي مِنْ شَبابٍ وشبّانِ

    He harvested the stalks of precedence as a child and adolescent

    And attained the heights in his youth and as a youth

  30. لقد جمعَ الهادي بن أحمد في الوَرى

    مكارمَ شتَّى ما اجْتَمعنَ لإنسانِ

    Indeed, Al-Haadi ibn Ahmad has gathered in existence

    Diverse merits that no human has assembled

  31. خطَاباً كما افترت ثغورُ زواهرٍ

    وخلقاً كما اهتزت معاطف أغصانِ

    Eloquence unmatched as the buds of flowers opened

    Morals vibrant as the branches of trees shook

  32. ونثراً كما رقَتْ كؤوس سلافةٍ

    ونَظْماً كما راقْت قلائدُ عقْيانِ

    Generosity smooth as the cups of wine

    Poetry delightful as the necklaces of maidens

  33. أَمَوْلَي الْقَوافي السَّائِرات الّتي غدتْ

    يُقرّ لها فِكْراً لبيدٍ وحَسّانِ

    My verses proceeding whom knowledge

    Agrees with Labid and Hassaan’s compositions

  34. أَبثْكَ شوقاً لي إليكَ أَقَلّه

    يهدِّدُ مِن ركنًَي ثَبير وثَهْلاَنِ

    Relay to him a yearning from me, however little

    That threatens to erupt from the abode of Thabeer and Thahlaan

  35. أروحُ بقَلْبٍ فارغ مِنْ تصبّري

    وأغدو بصَدْرٍ مِنْ شجونيَ ملآنِ

    I come with a heart empty of your patience

    And rise with a chest full of my passions

  36. فَهَلْ عطفةٌ بالقُرب منكم لشيّقٍ

    إلى ورْدِ هاتيكِ الشمائل ظمآنِ

    Is there a kindness in nearness from you, for one thirsty

    For the blossoms of those features?

  37. ومُنّ سَريعاً بالجوابِ فإنّ لي

    إليكَ اشتقاق المغْرمِ المرتقى عَالي الشّاني

    Bestow the reply quickly, for I have

    For you, the longing of an ardent lover, sublime in rank

  38. وحيّ الحُسَين الملك نجلَ مُطهّرٍ

    أخا المجدِ سامي المرتقى عَالي الشّاني

    Greetings of a passionate lover, whose passion and love

    Are for their plains, not for truffles and anemones

  39. وإخوتَه الغُرّ الأكارم مَن بنوا

    بناء المعالي فوق هامة كيوانِ

    Don’t blame that my letters were delayed

    It wasn’t out of boredom from me or disdain

  40. تحيّةُ صبٍّ شوقُه وغرامُه

    لِسَوحهم لا لِلْعقيق ونعمانِ

    Arrows of harm for the enviers pierce me

    And lengthy worries haven’t ceased to cloak me

  41. ولا تَعتبنْ في أنّ كُتْبي تأخّرتْ

    فما عَنْ مَلالٍ كانَ منّي وشنْئَانِ

    They continue to plot against me, O son of nobles, and long

    Have they accustomed me to good morals before

  42. رماحُ أذىً لِلْحاسِدين تنوشني

    وطول هموم لم تزَلْ قط تغشاني

    So many a confrontation between me and the turns of fate

    Make the days of gloom and Dhubyan seem trivial

  43. تتمَر لي يا بْنَ الكرامِ وطالما

    قديماً على حسن العوائد أجراني

    My profession in literature is enough of an affliction

    That has caused the decrease and impairment of my worth

  44. فكم وقعةٍ بيني وبينَ صروفه

    تهونُ لها أيام عبسٍ وذبيان

    If it weren’t for its tyranny against me except

    That it cast me with the arrow of distance from you, deafening me

  45. وحَسْبي داءٌ حرفةٌ أدبيّةٌ

    غدتْ سبباً في وضع قدري ونقْصاني

  46. ولو لم يكنْ من جورِه غير أنّه

    رماني بسهم البعد عنكَ فأصْماني
