1. Enjoy the little—if more...

Perhaps goodness lies in what you do not desire.

  2. !

You crossed the sky seeking a descent,

yet one such as you—you are ever bent on ascent!

  3. So do not grieve when the world turns away,

nor rejoice in whatever it bestows.

  4. Take heart in what you have lost, for many a loss

returns to you laden with every benefit.

  5. I try to be a friend to myself,

yet I am harsh toward myself.

  6. I call it to account for every moment of attention

that scatters me, though absent-mindedness is already here.

  7. !

And when I sense defeat within my being,

for its own delight, through it I turn away from it!

  8. I embrace every sorrow—not submissively—

but after it comes the poem.

  9. I conceal it when my eyes betray me,

Enjoy the little, for it is a world

upon which the noblest spend themselves—a thankless world.

  21. For the lot of everyone born upon it,

even if they reach the peaks, is a loving grave.
