على قلبي أخافُ وأنتَ قادرْ

فعلِّمني الرّمايةَ، ثمَّ غادر

My heart fears though you are able

Teach me to shoot, then take your leave

بأعماقي أرى الأسوارَ تهوي

وأنتَ مُحَصَّنٌ خلفَ السَّواتر

In my depths I see the walls crumbling

While you're fortified behind barriers

تُقطِّعُ بالدلالِ نياط قلبي

وتلبسُ وجهَ جبَّارِ الخواطر

With coquetry you shred my heart to pieces

And dress the face of my proud thoughts

تغيبُ مُقاتلاً، وتعودُ طفلاً

يُقبِّلُ أعيُني، ويقولُ: حاضر!

You disappear a fighter, and return a child

Who kisses my eyes, and says: I'm here!

أتيتُكَ حاملاً أرَقَ الليالي

أُفتشُ فيكَ عن صَدْرٍ لسَاهر

I came to you carrying the gentlest nights

Searching in you for a breast for an insomniac

تَنَازَعُني المَكارهُ والأماني

وتختلطُ المشاعرُ بالمشاعر

Afflictions and wishes contend within me

Feelings mingle with feelings

وألمَحُ من بعيدٍ ألفَ نارٍ

فأحضُنُها، وتُغريني المَخاطر!

And I glimpse from afar a thousand fires

So I embrace them, tempted by danger!

أسِحرٌ أنتَ؟ أيُّ هوىً رماني

فعلَّقَ مركبي بحبالِ شاعر؟

Are you a sorcerer? What passion cast me

Mooring my vessel with a poet's ropes?

لصحوكَ خذ ضبابي وانتظرني

سأمسَحُ من عيونِكَ كلَّ عابر

Awaken, take my haze and wait for me

I will wipe all passersby from your eyes

لقد أحببتُ في عينيكَ موتي

وأنتَ برغمِ موتكَ بي، تُكابر

For in your eyes I've come to love my death

Yet you, despite your death in me, persist

فكيفَ أنالُ من تقواكَ أمناً

وأنتَ بهجرِ من يهواكَ، فاجر!

How can I gain security from your piety

When you are debauched, shunning those who adore you!
