قَعيدُكَ يا يزيد أبا قبيسٍ

أَتنذر كي تلاقينا النذورا

Sitting idle, O Yazid son of Abu Qubais,

Do you threaten us with your vows?

وَتوضع مجمر الركبانِ أنّ

وُجدنا في مراسِ الحربِ خورا

And will you kindle the embers of travelers

If we are found weak in battle?

أَلَم تعلم قعيدك يا يزيدٌ

بأنّا نَقمع الشيخَ الفَجورا

Do you not know, O idle Yazid,

That we crush the shameless old man,

وَنفَقأ ناظريهِ وَلا نُبالي

وَنَجعلُ فوقَ هامتهِ الذرورا

And we gouge out his eyes, and care not,

And place scum upon his brow?

فَأَبلغ إِن عرضت بَني كلابٍ

فَإنّا نحنُ أَقمعنا بجيرا

So inform, if you encounter the sons of dogs,

That we, we crushed Bujair,

وَضرّجنا عبيدةَ بِالعوالي

فَأَصبح موثقاً فينا أَسيرا

And we drenched Obaidah in anguish,

So he became our captive prisoner,

أَفَخراً في الخلاءِ بغيرِ فخرٍ

وَعندَ الحربِ خوّاراً ضَجورا

Boasting emptily in privacy,

Yet in war a cowering coward.
