The tears flowed until there were no more tears left in my eyes
And I suffered until there was no more hope left in patience
It's not me who's crying, but love itself
Wanting the lion's age to bow down submissively
By God, my heart - how immense is its endurance!
Steadfast, while swords clash against swords
By God, my heart - how little it can bear
When the beloved one bids farewell
Whenever a sword of misfortune flashed, I trembled
Whenever a sword of glances flashed, I wavered even more
I lead the wolf of the jungle, while it's drugged
And the fawn leads me while I follow
On a night when dawn lost its way
Not knowing from whence it comes or where it will rise
I stayed up with it, watching the planets and stars
My eyelids rebel, while tears obey
I wish the phantom from Buzurah would visit me
But how can a phantom visit one who does not sleep?
I've lived an easy life for ages, free of cares
Neither complaining nor feeling pain
I go out and I have a place for fun and games
I return with a meadow for joy and frolicking
I kept seeking love until I found it
But when I wanted intimacy, there was only aloofness
With that love, there was no escape for me
No hope left, in that intimacy
I am like a feather in the air of youth
In the hands of time that gives no respite
I am like a ship in the sea of passion
Engulfed by surging, raging waves
I am like a lost wanderer in a gloomy desert
Luxuriantly growing shrubs make me lose my way
So I am neither guided nor do I see stars
No lightning flashes to show the way
Gently, slowly, O critic blaming me
And making me drink cups of bitter blame
I did not listen to advice nor obey commands
What lover obeys or listens to advice?
O Love, if only this speech could help!
O blessed advice, if only it could avail!
God has decreed that in love no one has foresight
An irresistible decree that cannot be repealed
I passed by the abode whose people have departed
Abandoning it to desolation
It was a beautiful place of loved ones
A resort where I spent summer and spring
Oh, if only I knew: will our life return there?
And separated ones reunite again?
So that yearnings may be fulfilled and passions subside
Livers cool down and tears run dry?
I cannot forget the night I endured terror
And terror made me shake with fright
I had no other companion but the darkness and solitude
No happiness except a heart filled with dread
No friend but my she-camel surrounded
By wolves competing through the wasteland
No eyes looking except the lackluster stars
Wondering what I was doing to myself
When my she-camel complained of fatigue
After the whip tore at her sides to make her run faster
I rode her like someone whose honor is at stake
As if I had to pay the tax collector
Until the tents became visible and a light
Appeared from the side of the encampment
So I headed for the encampment which was sleeping
Penetrating through the blackness while they were asleep
I did not know their condition before
But their scattered belongings guided me
So I passed the night, God only knows
With only an ear listening and an eye feasting
We were kept awake by the moaning wind
And lightning flashes frightened us
There were no eyes except our fear and dread
No one glancing or listening except us
The sweetest nectar is what's hardest to attain
The most precious intimacy is that denied
So despite fate she was the most beautiful
I have ever seen - no, my whole life!
All that disturbed us was the coo of a dove
On the boughs at dawn repeating her song
So I got up with no qualms to hold me back
Submitting myself entirely to sublime detachment
I bade her farewell while sorrow overwhelmed our patience
And our hearts were torn with sadness
She said: “Is this the last time between us?”
“Will there be no future meeting?”
I said: “Trust in God, O my bliss!”
“It’s but a summer cloud - soon it shall dissipate”
I left while my heart remained in the tent
Turning back towards it as I departed
Grant me respite, O Fate, check yourself
My share is enough - no more bitterness for me to drink!
Have mercy on me - the flood has reached disaster”
No escape left through the bow of patience
Yet I have become fearless and stoic
Unperturbed if calamity should strike
I have armed myself with patience and entrusted
My fate to God, who gives and denies
I do not dread misfortunes and their occurrence
Even if their poison is that of black serpents
I have become the neighbor of the Imam, and he
Is the noblest and most unassailable of men
I had heard of him for ages, but when
I saw him myself, he surpassed all I heard
I witnessed the most wondrous splendor
Illuminating his face - a light from God
The barefoot crowd the doors where he resides
Neither veiled from them, nor close-fisted
When you walk all eyes turn towards you
When you speak all necks bend to hear
Through you, jurists swagger with pride
You are the crown with which they are adorned
My Master - I face the days and their ups and downs
So either help me or do with me as you will
I am but the sapling of your bounty
Watered by rain showered from your clouds
If it pleases you, then the merit that befits you is yours
If not, then I am wasted among mortal men
