1. إن أسماء في الورى خيرُ أُنثى

    صنعت في الوداع خير صنيعِ

    The best of women in creation is Asma

    She was most gracious in her farewell

  2. جاءَها ابن الزبيرِ يسحبُ دِرعاً

    تحتَ درعٍ منسوجةٍ من نجيعِ

    Ibn Az-Zubayr came to her pulling off armor

    Beneath armor of interwoven mail

  3. قال يا أُمٍّ قد عييتُ بأمري

    بين أسرٍ مُرٍّ وقتلٍ فظيع

    He said, "O mother I am exhausted by my affair

    Between bitter captivity and dreadful killing

  4. خانني الصحبُ والزمان فما لي

    صاحبٌ غيرَ سَيفي المطبوعِ

    My friends have betrayed me and so has time

    I have no friend left but my sharpened sword

  5. وأرى نجمي الذي لاحَ قبلاً

    غابَ عني ولم يَعد لِطلوعِ

    And I see my star that shone before

    Has vanished from me with no return

  6. بذل القومُ لي الأمانَ فما لي

    غيره إن قبلته من شفيع

    The people have given me asylum but I have no one

    To intercede for me if I accept it from them

  7. فأجابت والجفن قفر كلآن لم

    يك من قبل موطناً للدموع

    She replied while her eyelids were barren land that had

    Never before been a place for tears

  8. واستحالت تلك الدموعُ بُخاراً

    صاعداً من فؤادها المصدوع

    And those tears turned into steam

    Rising from her battered heart

  9. لا تسلم إلا الحياة وإلا

    هيكلاً شأنه وشأن الجذوع

    Do not surrender except your life unless

    You are like the trunks of trees

  10. إن موتاً في ساحد الحربِ خيرٌ

    لكَ من عيش ذلةٍ وخضوع

    Death in the battlefield of war is better

    For you than life of humiliation and submission

  11. إن يكن قد أضاعك الناس فاصبر

    وتثبت فالله غير مضيع

    If people have let you down then be patient

    And stand firm for God does not waste

  12. مت هماماً كما حييتَ هماماً

    واحى في ذكرِكَ المجيدِ الرفيعِ

    Die prestigious as you lived prestigious

    And live sublimely in your glorious honorable memory

  13. ليس بين الحياةِ والموت إلا

    كرةٌ في سوادِ تلك الجموع

    Between life and death there is nothing

    But a throw of dice amidst those crowds

  14. ثم قامت تضمه لوداعٍ

    هائل ليس بعدَهُ من رُجوع

    Then she stood to bid him

    A tremendous farewell after which there is no return

  15. لمست دِرعه فقالت لعهدي

    بك يا ابن الزبيرِ غيرَ جزوع

    She touched his armor and said true to my oath to you

    O Ibn Az-Zubayr, do not waver

  16. إن بأس القضاءِ في الناس بأسٌ

    لا يُبالي ببأس تلك الدوع

    The might of destiny upon people is a might

    That does not care about the might of those regimes

  17. فنضاها عَنهُ وفرَّ إلى الموتِ

    بدرعٍ من الفخارِ منيعِ

    So he took it off and rushed to his death

    With armor of impenetrable pottery

  18. وأتى أمه النعي فجادَت

    بعدَ لأيٍّ بدمعِها الممنوع

    And news of his death came to his mother, so she wept

    With unrestrained tears after no more
