1. قدومٌ ولكن لا أقولُ سعيدُ

    وملكٌ وإن طالَ المدى سيبيدُ

    An arrival, but I do not say a happy one,

    And a kingdom, though long-lasting, will perish.

  2. بعدتَ وثغر الناس بالبشرِ باسِمٌ

    وعدتَ وحُزنٌ في الفُؤادِ شديدُ

    You went far away while people's faces smiled,

    And you returned while deep sorrow filled my heart.

  3. تمر بنا لا طرفَ نحوكَ ناظرٌ

    ولا قلبَ من تلك القلوبِ ودُودُ

    You pass by us with no glance our way,

    No loving heart among these loving hearts.

  4. علام التهاني هل هناك مآثِرٌ

    فنفرحَ أو سعىٌ لديكَ حميدُ

    Why celebrations - are there glorious deeds

    That bring joy? Or a worthy endeavor of yours?

  5. إذا لم يكن امر ففيمَ مواكبٌ

    وإن لم يكن نهى ففيمَ جُنودُ

    If no command, then why processions?

    And if no prohibition, then why soldiers?

  6. تذكرنا روياكَ أيامَ أُنزِلَت

    علينا خطوبٌ من جُدودِكَ سُودُ

    Your arrival reminds us of days when

    Calamities from your ancestors came unto us.

  7. رَمتنا بكم مقدونيا فأصابنا

    مصوبُ سهمٍ بالبلاءِ سديدُ

    Macedonia's arrows struck us, inflicting

    Severe wounds that brought much affliction.

  8. فلما توليتم طغيتم وهكذا

    إذا أصبح التركي وهو عميدُ

    But when you left, you became tyrants, and thus

    When Turks rule, calamity is spread.

  9. فكم سُفِكت منا دماءٌ بريئةٌ

    وكم ضمنت تلك الدماءَ لحودُ

    How much innocent blood was shed,

    And how much that blood the graves secured!

  10. وكم ضمّ بطنُ البحر أشلاءَ جمةً

    تمزِّقُ أحشاءً لها وكُبُودُ

    How many corpses the sea belly held -

    Bodies torn, their guts ripped and injured!

  11. وكم صارَ شملٌ للبلادِ مشتتا

    وخربَ قصرٌ في البلادِ مشيدُ

    How unity of nations was shattered

    And a towering palace in the land destroyed!

  12. وسيقَ عظيمُ القومِ مِنَّا مكبلاً

    له تحتَ أثقالِ القُيودِ وئيدُ

    How the great men among us were led in chains,

    Collapsing under the weight of shackles and bonds!

  13. فما قام منكم بالعدالةِ طارفٌ

    ولا سار منكم بالسدادِ تليدُ

    None of you walked the path of justice,

    None tread the course of integrity.

  14. كأني بقصرِ الملكِ أصبحَ بائداً

    من الظلمِ والظلمُ المبينُ مُبيدُ

    It is as if the king's palace lies in ruins

    From injustice - and clear injustice destroys.

  15. ويندبُ في أطلاله البومُ ناعباً

    له عندَ ترديدِ الرثاءِ نشيدُ

    The owl mourns its ruins, lamenting

    With a grieving melody at its collapse.

  16. أعباس ترجو أن تكونَ خليفةً

    كما ودَّ آباءٌ ورامَ جُدودُ

    Al-Abbas, you hope to become the caliph,

    As your fathers wanted and your ancestors sought.

  17. فيا ليتَ دنيانا تزولُ وليتنا

    نكون ببطنِ الأرض حين تسودُ

    Oh, if only our world would disappear, and we

    In earth's belly were when you ruled!

  18. أعباسُ لا تحزن على الملك إنه

    تقضى فهذا الحزن ليس يفيدُ

    Al-Abbas, do not grieve for the kingdom, for

    This sadness brings no benefit or reprieve.

  19. أعباسُ صار الملكُ في يد عادلٍ

    يذبُّ الردى عن حوضهِ ويذودُ

    Al-Abbas, the rule is now in just hands

    That ward off evil and strongly defend.

  20. وقد كان جفنُ الدهر وسنانَ هاجداً

    وها هو هب اليومَ منه هجود

    Though fate's eyelid and sharp teeth once raged,

    Today it gently flows, appeased.

  21. بريطانيا لا زالَ أمركِ نافذاً

    وظلكِ في أرجاءِ مصرَ مديدُ

    Britain, your command still prevails

    And your shadow stretches across Egypt's plains.

  22. ليصبح شملُ الأمرِ وهو منظمٌ

    ويصبحَ عنه الظلمُ وهو طريدُ

    May unity prevail, organized and just,

    And injustice flee, exiled and distraught!

  23. أيجرؤُ ذِئبٌ أن يدوس برجلِهِ

    عريناً وفي ذاكَ العرينِ أسودُ

    Would a wolf dare tread with its paw

    A den where fierce lions abound?

  24. فأنتِ احتللتِ القُطرَ والقُطرُ دارِسٌ

    فأضحى بفضلِ العدلِ وهوَ جديدُ

    You have occupied this land, and it flourishes

    With justice renewed - a fresh, welcomed dress.

  25. متى ما أرى الأعلامَ يخفق ظلُّها

    على أرضِ مصرٍ إنني لسعيدُ

    Whenever I see your flags fluttering

    On Egyptian soil, I rejoice, gladness abounds!
