Glory and might are yours, O Bilal

The broken heart almost takes flight

You have conquered thousands in asceticism, while we are all

Poor towards a single drop of what you have gained

If this necklace is like a crown in value

Then you deserve the titles of kings

And wealth is but a sign of status in the world

So wherever you see it, the position is dangerous

And if there was a link between merit and status

Thrones and palaces would crumble and fall

So O Bilal, do not despair, for many a crowned one

Is like you, just a pulpit and a bed

You are not ignorant of the measures of things

The likes of you among the articulate are many

If eloquent speech has eluded you, as you see

Still your share of the heart's utterance is plentiful

You have fulfilled the covenant of a friend, while

No scoundrel or villain has kept a friend's covenant

So live silent, content with your lot, glad

That speech is but harm and evils

It is misguidance for a person to see merit in himself

While his contribution to noble deeds is little

A person is only his sincerity and loyalty

After that, every great one is small

Of what use is a person's eloquence

If his conscience is devoid of truthful speech?

I praise you O Bilal, because I am a poet

And you are well able to reward

If you knew what I say, you would feed me

What no prince has fed the praisers
