O wanderer traversing the countryside
Whether you come to Münster or to Wente
Ask the country shepherds there about cows
That resemble Salhame however you wish
Alas, you will never find anyone in this world
Who can show you one similar in beauty
Oh her beauty as she grazes in her meadows
The cows of Kerry frolicking in their pastures
And if she wanders confused to the markets
Her beauty on display, the cows are abashed
The poets of the neighborhood sing her praises
Songs of beauty while the farmer boasts
There, the maidens wish that the silk
Of her coat were as soft as satin
Everyone admires her, rather, cajoles her
And all call her the darling of the people
Then there is a white or reddish cow
Ill-tempered, noisy, gluttonous
But the cows of Kerry are gentle
Alas, no cows can match their grace
Their milk deserves to nourish the food
That delights the throats of sultans
It deserves to feed every armored knight
Plunging into battle, storming the fields
Tell those who diligently record history
The cows of Kerry are pillars of merit and fame
Link their name to Helen’s in eternity
On the walls of Troy or Canis Major
And you, o artist depicting her
In the shade of oak trees, coils of ivy
Paint for us these cows grazing
Green grass in the folds of meadows
