I returned to you today after my long absence
With sorrow overflowing in my soul
I returned, my mind lost in wandering thoughts
My heart weak, its throbbing faded
O land of my dreams, will I find my childhood again?
Will another day in life make me happy?
I roamed your nights when the wind howled
I crossed your waves when the river raged
I came to find rest in your shadows
So my anxious heart may calm its confusion
To die content in you, lulled
By the fragrance of meadows wafting gently
To be wrapped by the lilac’s breeze, let
My eyes delight in flowers and gardens
The last sound I listen to
Is your whisper, fading into death
But in vain I came, I found only
Phantoms multiplying in desolation
Winter has erected its barriers
Darkness besieging on all sides
Silence and decay hover above you
Souls of gloom scatter and disperse
The dense forest assaults its thickets
To invade them as the turbulent waves roar
A frigid breeze blows from its caves
Echoing in the wind, responding to the caverns
The bat flutters about, and the
Predatory crows circle above the shore
A haunt of owls atop a barren perch
Where a biting cold breeze flew past
Chanting the melody of death in the temple of gloom
Relating legends passed down through the centuries
As if you are epics in the journey of nights
Recited by a poet at death’s side
Scattershot death has passed its judgement on us all
As the ceaseless nights go by
You were a star blazing through the storms
Pursued by the specter of gloom until it vanished
You were the flame of hope flickering in the dark
Attacked by gusts and howling winds
You were a blossom flourishing on the shore of sorrow
Adorned by the first fruits of autumn
You slept alone, knew no companion but your shadow
Lamenting with you, keeping you company
Enough now, rest, be still
For I cannot bear what destiny decrees
I rode with my hopes on wild mares
And returned like a migrant bird
Who saw behind the city walls a palm tree
Shading him with its shade as the day departed
My time in the world of sorrow is done
Yet the endless nights are not through with me
O horizon of life, o dawn of its night
Where dreams and thoughts fluttered about
And feelings drowned in its attraction
Wandering until they faded into love
O sunset in a world whose ambiance
Is a mirage over the anxious valley
Guarded in silence by the trees of paradise
With a scent that stirs the imagination in me
I hear golden music
Cascading over the meadows
I let my eyes wander into reverie
And glimpse shadows conversing there
The wind in the caves has calmed and shaken
Glad tidings across the horizon from the meadow’s dream
A breeze fluttered among the maidens
Teasing them in the languor of dawn
Dawn appeared above the meadow, yellow and smiling
The flowers of plants saw it bewildered
No flower has bloomed or bird chirped
In these thickets
The sparrow plucked its feathers in the garden
The tresses of the willows drooped down
Desolation looms over the flowers
Silence over its yellowed leaves spreads
The morning breeze whispers farewell
To the plain, for the poet has left the world
So the bees deserted the flowers, which withered
As the blossoms turned away from the chimes
