وما حائماتٌ حمن يوماً وليلةً
على الماء يغشين العِصيَّ حوانِ
Wandering endlessly night and day
Upon the water, shrouding the reeds,
يَرين حباب الماء والموتُ دونَه
وهُنَّ بأبصار إليه روانِ
They see but bubbles on the surface, death beneath,
Yet with eager eyes they gaze below.
لوائب لا يصدرن عنه لوجهةٍ
ولا هنَّ من بَردِ الحياضِ داون
Ceaselessly roaming with no destination,
Unaffected by the chill of ice,
بأكثر مني فرط شوقٍ وغلَّةٍ
إليك ولكنَّ العَدُوَّ عداني
More ardently than I, crazed with yearning,
Do I long for you, but the foe thwarts me.
