يا نفسُ روضُ الأمنيات تبسُّما
أيامُهُ في العمرِ تسطعُ أنجُما
O soul, the garden of aspirations smiled;
its days, throughout life, shine like stars.
وموائدُ القرباتِ عابقةُ الشَّذا
تسري جلاءً للقلوبِ وبَلْسما
The banquet tables of devotions that draw one near to God breathe sweet perfume;
they spread, bringing hearts illumination and balm.
مُذْ رَفْرَفَتْ أعلامُهُ وحروفهُ
تنسابُ من كلماتنا ندَماً دما
Press onward—its banners have fluttered, and its letters
stream from our words as remorse, as blood.
لَمْ نُهدِه نصْراً ولمْ نجْعَلْ لهُ
في المجدِ والعلياءِ مِنَّا سُلَّما
We gave it no victory, nor did we make for it
a ladder of ourselves toward glory and the heights.
