  1. O longing of a lifetime, keep far from the path of passion.

    Gather the fruit of the leaves, and strive with all your might.

  2. Saddle your resolve, making it the emblem of noble deeds.

    And should the river’s face grow sullen, do not go down to drink.

  3. With calm composure, withstand the hurricane’s violence.

    For patience, when I seek victory, is among my provisions.

  4. Guard your chastity with faith, and veil yourself,

    that your heart’s core may be cleansed of guile and grief.
