في كلِّ مُنْعطفٍ تموتُ أمُومةٌ
وأبوَّةٌ ترِدُ الحياضَ وتنتهي
At every turn a motherhood dies
And a fatherhood returns to the loins and ends
ويلُ النفوسِ إذا تعلَّقَها الردى
في لهْفةِ الهيْمانِ أوْ عَلِقتْ به
Woe to the souls when they are seized by ruin
In the madness of anxiety or clinging to it
تجْثو تُقّبِّل أخْمصَيْه لَعلَّها
تنجو من العيشِ الذي لا تشتهي
They kneel, kissing its heels, hoping
To be saved from a life they do not desire
بعضُ النِّعاج تنامُ طاويةَ الحَشا
ورُعاتُها بينَ اللذائذِ تلتهي
Some of the sheep sleep hugging the scrub
While their shepherds indulge in pleasures
