أقبل العامُ حاملاً في يديه

توصيات الأخِ الكبيرِ إليه

The year came bearing in its hands

The elder brother's last requests to him

قال: إني تركتُ إرثاً ورائي

تتباكى قُرى اليتامَى عليه

He said: I left behind me an inheritance

Over which the orphan villages weep

كم فَتى حامَ حولَه وتمنَّى

أن يُناجي بسِحرِه أصْغَرَيْهِ

How many a lad hoped round him and wished

To whisper to him with his magic the name of his beloved

زَمْجَرتْ ألسُنٌ عليه حدادٌ

فنَعى حَظَّه إلى مقلتيه

Tongues clamored in mourning over him

And he carried his fortune in his eyelashes
