أتطمعُ أن تمزِّقني الحروبُ

وأن يغتال أفراحي الغروبُ

Do you hope that wars will tear me apart,

And that sorrows will assassinate my joys at sunset,

وأن تُلْقي بي الأيامُ شِلْواً

تناوشهُ الكوارثُ والكروبُ؟

And that days will cast me aside broken,

With disasters and sorrows gnawing at me?

أتتركني وأنتَ شقيقُ روحي

تقاذفُني الفدافدُ والدروبُ؟

Will you abandon me, though you're the soul's twin,

While roads and paths toss me around?

أجِبْني كيفَ خانتني الليالي؟

وكيف تجهَّمَ الوجهُ الطَّروبُ؟

Tell me how nights have betrayed me,

And how the cheerful face has frowned.
