1. سأخرجُ من حرير العاشقاتِ

    ومن ذهبٍ يخونُ معلّقاتي

    I will emerge from the silk of lovers

    And from gold that betrays my pendants

  2. أجلْ لي صاحبٌ يبكي فأبكي

    ولي طللٌ يليق بمفرداتي

    Yes, I have a companion who cries, so I cry

    And I have a shade that suits my soliloquies

  3. ولي لغتان: فصحى أنجبتني

    ودارِجَةٌ سأمنحُها رُفاتي!

    I have two languages: the eloquent Arabic begot me

    And the vernacular that I will gift its softness!

  4. ولي زهوُ «المنخّل» حين يُفضي

    بأسرارِ البُروقِ إلى الحصاةِ

    And I have the pride of "al-Munakhil" when it reveals

    The secrets of lightning to pebbles

  5. ولي شرفُ الصعودِ إلى غيومٍ

    تُقطّرني على «خدر الفتاة

    And I have the honor of ascending to clouds

    That rain me on the cheek of the young woman

  6. ولي خبزُ الخرافةِ ملحُ دمعي

    رمالُ بداوتي خمرُ انفلاتي

    And I have the bread of myth, the salt of my tear

    The sands of my nomadism, the wine of my deviations

  7. ولي بابٌ على الملكوت نبعٌ

    بوادي الجنِّ عينٌ للمَهاة

    And I have a door to the kingdom, a spring

    In the valley of jinn, an eye for the perishers

  8. ولي أبديّةُ الصحراءِ ليلٌ

    بآلاف النجوم الشاحبات

    And I have the eternity of the desert, a night

    With thousands of pale stars

  9. حنينُ النُّوق ياقوتُ القوافي

    ولألاءُ التصعلكِ في الفلاة

    The yearning of she-camels, the ruby of rhymes

    And the pearls of wandering in the deserts

  10. وليْ ما ليس لي خمسون أمّاً

    ولكني يتيمُ الأغنيات

    And I have what I don't have, fifty mothers

    But I'm an orphan of songs

  11. أتيتُ وفي يدي العسراءِ سيفٌ

    ينوحُ على الضحيّة والجُناة

    I came with poverty in my hand, a sword

    That mourns over the victim and the killers

  12. بكيتُ وما بكيتُ قروحَ روحي

    ولا شوقي لليل الظاعنات

    I cried but I didn't cry over the wounds of my soul

    Nor my longing for the piercing night

  13. سَيَرْتَهِنُ «السموألُ» من دروعي

    وديعةَ ذاهبٍ نحو الممات

    "Al-Samaw'al" stripped off my armors

    And the deposit of one going towards death

  14. ستنسلخ القبائلُ منْ دماها

    ستنتقمُ الحياةُ من الحياة!!

    The tribes will peel off their blood

    Life will take revenge on life!

  15. أأطلبُ في بلاط الرومِ ملكاً

    ولي ملكُ الرياحِ السافيات؟

    Shall I seek a king in the court of Rome

    While I have the king of raging winds?

  16. سأترك لحمَ أسلافي لقيطاً

    يحنُّ إلى حنان الأمّهات

    I will leave the flesh of my ancestors neglected

    Yearning for the affection of mothers

  17. وأبحث عن معلّقةٍ لروحي

    بعيداً عن صواريخ الغُزاة

    And I will look for a pendant for my soul

    Away from the invaders' missiles

  18. سلاماً يا امرؤ القيسِ انتهينا

    حقائبَ في مطارات الشَّتات

    The eternity of the desert is a night for me

    With thousands of pale stars

  19. أنا لا أعبدُ الأصنامَ شعراً

    ولا أبكي الرسومَ الدارسات

    The she-camels' yearning is the ruby of rhymes

    And the pearls of wandering in the wilderness

  20. فُطِمْتُ عن الوقوفِ على خرابٍ

    وتأبينِ الرمادِ بنهنهاتي

    And I have what I don't have, fifty mothers

  21. برئتُ من افتخارٍ عنجهيٍّ

    بأيام العظامِ الباليات

    I came with poverty in my hand, a sword

    That mourns over the victim and the killers

  22. ولم أصعدْ إلى نسبٍ عريقٍ

    سوى نسبِ الصحيفةِ والدَّواة!!

    I cried but I didn't cry over the wounds of my soul

    Nor my longing for the piercing night

  23. سقطتُ إلى الحياة دماً أليفاً

    يخوضُ المعمعانَ بلا أداةٍ

    "Al-Samaw'al" stripped off my armors

  24. وما لي في رباط الخيلِ جهدٌ

    جهادي في رباط الغانيات

    كراهيةَ الرعيّةِ للرعاة

    طَوالعَ في كتاب النيّرات

    The eternity of the desert is a night for me

    With thousands of pale stars

  29. من اليونان سفسطتي وشكّي

    وحيرةِ موقفي وتساؤلاتي!!

    The she-camels' yearning is the ruby of rhymes

    And the pearls of wandering in the wilderness

  30. سأهبطُ جنّةَ الشيطانِ يوماً

    وأقرع بابَ مملكةِ العُصاة

    And I have what I don't have, fifty mothers

  31. وأصعدُ نحو علّيينَ يوماً

    لتقتحمَ السماءَ تبتُّلاتي

    I came with poverty in my hand, a sword

    That mourns over the victim and the killers

  32. سأعصر ?رمةَ الأيامِ خمراً

    وأسقي للحياة تناقضاتي

    I cried but I didn't cry over the wounds of my soul

    Nor my longing for the piercing night

  33. سلاما يا ابنَ هانىءِ نحن جئنا

    بعصر الشكِّ لا عصرِ الهُداة

    I am the poetry of the age, so sleep

    Over the wickedness of the flock and rulers

  34. عنيداً أبتغي ما لا يُسَمَّى

    وحيداً أستظلُّ بمعجزاتي

    I am the poetry of the age, so rise

    Against the betrayal of bared swords

  35. سأخترق النبوءة دون خوفٍ

    على خيل المعاني الخالدات

    A thousand "Baghdads" will fall, so go

    To the king of Persians and the swindlers

  36. نُفِيتُ فغبتُ كي أَنْفي غيابي

    نُعيتُ فجئتُ كي أَنْعَى نُعاتي

    I escaped to the one I will escape from

    And the missed chances led me to missed chances

  37. أنا هو أحمدُ الكوفيُّ ناموا

    على خُبْث الرعيّةِ والولاة

    I lost, yes I lost, I lost myself

    To gain what I lost from gifts

  38. أنا هو أحمد الكوفيُّ قوموا

    على غدر السيوفِ المشرعات

    But I assure you with my death

    And in the honor of decay, the honor of life

  39. ستسقط ألفُ «بغدادٍ» فسيروا

    إلى ملك الأعاجمِ والخُصاة

    I will leave you and me pure

    To the kingdom of the mistress of languages!

  40. فررتُ إلى الذي سأفرّ منهُ

    وألجأني الفواتُ إلى الفوات

    I entered "Ma'arrat al-Nu'man" blind

    Seeing the crawl of larvae in plants

  41. خسرتُ أَجَلْ خسرتُ خسرتُ نفسي

    لأربحَ ما خسرتُ من الهِبات

    Seeing the misery of embryos moaning

    From wombs searching for crumbs

  42. ولكني أكيدُكُمُ بموتي

    وفي شرف الردى شرفُ الحياة

    And here I am in the third of my prisons

    The raven of the soul wails in my throats

  43. سأذهب طاهراً منكم ومني

    إلى ملكوت سيّدةِ اللغات!!

    I recovered so I didn't suffer from the inheritance of the past

    And I lived so I wasn't captivated by a dream to come

  44. دخلتُ «معرّةَ النعمانِ» أعمى

    يرى زحفَ العُصارة في النبات

    So how was I expelled from the heavens of my doubt

    As an infidel excommunicated by my judges?

  45. يرى بؤسَ الأجنّةِ وهي تعوي

    من الأصلاب بحثاً عن فُتات

    And who am I as the dust dives underneath me?

    And who am I in the sky of airplanes?

  46. وها أنا في الثلاثة من سُجوني

    غرابُ الروحِ ينعبُ في لُهاتي

    And who am I in metallic peace?

    And who am I in the wars of computers?

  47. شُفيتُ فما شَقيتُ بإرث ماضٍ

    وقيتُ فما سُبيتُ بحلم آت

    Goodbye O computer, we became

    Lines in the baskets of the neglected

  48. فكيف طُردتُ من جنّات شكّي

    مجوسيّاً يكفّرني قُضاتي؟

    I will search for the "Necessities" of my silence

    And for a grave the size of my contemplations!

  49. ومن أنا والترابُ يغوصُ تحتي؟

    ومن أنا في سماء الطائرات؟

    Why don't my shadows follow me?

    Why don't my qualities resemble me?

  50. ومنْ أنا في سلامٍ معدنيٍّ؟

    ومن أنا في حروب الحاسبات؟

    Why did forgetfulness ruin my heart?

    And my courage betrayed my memories?

  51. سلاماً أيها الحاسوبُ صرنا

    قوائمَ في سلال المهملات

    So there is no joy to befriend me, no companions

    And no anger to frighten my enemies

  52. سأبحث عن «لزومياتِ» صمتي

    وعن قبرٍ بحجم تأمُّلاتي!!

    As if I'm out of everything

    Raced by my death to my death!

  53. لماذا لا تُتابعني ظلالي؟

    لماذا لا تُشابهني صفاتي؟

    Away from my blood, my family's sorrow

    Away from the torment of existence

  54. لماذا خَرّبَ النسيانُ قلبي؟

    وخانتني شجاعةُ ذكرياتي

    The conquerors will pass over my bones

    So neither shed my blood, nor make my paths bleed

  55. فلا طربٌ ليأنسَ بي صِحابي

    ولا غضبٌ ليخشاني عِداتي

    I'm the stone of the end, so leave me

    To drown in the waters of my collapse

  56. كأني خارجٌ من كلّ شيءٍ

    يُسابقني إلى موتي مَواتي!!

    Twenty Andalusias fell for me to weep

    Over their ruins, the glory of the barefoot

  57. بعيداً عن دمي عن حزن أهلي

    بعيداً عن عذابِ الكائنات

    So who will see the howdah of the sword weeping?

    And who will gather the tear of the sword-makers?

  58. يمرُّ الفاتحون على عظامي

    فلا تدمى ولا تُدمي قَناتي

    And who will smell the scent of "Ibn Rushd"

    Traveling in the ink of "translations"?

  59. أنا حجرُ النهايةِ فاتركُوني

    لأغرقَ في مياه تداعياتي

    And who will melt the musk of the soul in it

    And dwell in the splendor of my minarets?

  60. هوتْ عشرون أندلساً لأبكي

    على أطلالها مجدَ الحُفاة

    And who will be the last Abshami

    Torn apart by the wailing of my compositions?

  61. فمن سيرى قرابَ السيفِ يبكي؟

    ومن سيلُمُّ دمعَ الصافنات؟

    And who will hang the bells among us

    At dawn in the neck of the wild doves?

  62. ومن سيشمُّ رائحةَ «ابنِ رشدٍ»

    تسافرُ في مداد «الترجمات»

    I ask you “Ibn Zaydun”, why

    Does the mighty oppress the oppressed?

  63. ومن سيضوعُ مِسكُ الروحِ فيهِ

    ويسكُن في بهاء مُنمنماتي

    The time of those who protected their zeal is gone

    And the time of the decadent does not suit me

  64. ومن سيكون آخرَ عَبْشميٍّ

    يُمزّقه نحيبُ مُوشّحاتي

    To the ruined quarter we return wandering

    “So the wombs of the impregnators did not weigh down"

  65. ومن سيعلّقُ الأجراسَ منا

    قُبيلَ الفجرِ في عُنُق الكُماة

    I am the populist speaker in my name

    And in the name of those despaired from salvation

  66. أتسألُ يا «ابن زيدون» لماذا

    يعافُ الشدوَ جبّارُ الشُّداة

    Convicted of openly committing "sorrow"

    And accused of disturbing tyrants

  67. مضى زمنُ الذين حَمَوْا حِماهم

    وليس يليقُ بي زمنُ اللواتي

    I am the delegate for inaugurating a generation

    That procreated in the crowds of buses

  68. إلى الرَّبْع الخرابِ نعود رَهْواً

    «فلا ثقلتْ بطونُ المنجِبات»

    It fell from the wombs aged

    To be cursed by the palms of midwives

  69. أنا المتحدِّثُ الشعبيُّ باسمي

    وباسم اليائسين من النجاة

    It grew in inadvertence, in the sterility of nights

    And in the barrenness of steps and signs!

  70. مُدانٌ بارتكاب «الحزنِ» جهراً

    ومتَّهمٌ بإزعاج الطغاة

    I give you good tidings of a terrible dragon

    That breathed under the roof of families

  71. أنا مندوبُ تدشينٍ لجيلٍ

    تَناسلَ في زحام الحافلات

    It will refuse your legacy without gratitude

    And express your anger without turning back

  72. تساقط من دم الأرحامِ كهلاً

    لتلعنَه أكفُّ القابلات

    It will dance in a foreign shirt

    And stuff its tobacco with indecencies

  73. نما في السهو في عَطَن الليالي

    وفي عُقْم الخطى واللافتات!!

    It will come down to its lad to take refuge

    To the hungry stray cats of love

  74. أُبشّرُكم بتِنّينٍ رهيبٍ

    تَنفّسَ تحت سقفِ العائلات

    It will make your fatherhood into bullets

    So crime ignites in all directions

  75. سيرفضُ إرثَكم دون امتنانٍ

    ويعبر سخطَكم دون التفات

    It will rejoice when Rome gives it

    The charity of lust and cans

  76. سيرقص في قميصٍ أجنبيٍّ

    ويحشو تبغَهُ بالموبقات

    It will be forced out of the horse stable

    And expelled from the prayer of minarets

  77. سيهبطُ نحو غُلْمته ليأوي

    إلى قطط الغرامِ الجائعات

    Goodbye O “Ibn Abd Allah”, Rome

    Distributes our bread at prayer time!

  78. سيصنع من أُبوّتكم رصاصاً

    لتندلعَ الجريمةُ في الجهات

    Why do you wound the serenity of my despair?

    And contrive the calmness of my maps?

  79. سيفرحُ عندما تعطيه «روما»

    معونةَ شهوةٍ ومُعلَّبات

    And invent a window for my soul?

    And create a third lung?

  80. سيخرج من رباط الخيلِ قسراً

    ويُطْرَد من دعاء المئذنات

    Your tenderness is the most dangerous of strangers to my heart

    And the most dangerous thing in your perturbations and my perturbations!

  81. سلاماً يا «ابنَ عبد اللهِ» «روما»

    تُوزّع خبزَنا وقتَ الصلاة!!

    Do I fear you or fear for you from me?

    They are two fears: affectionate and watchful

  82. لماذا تجرحين صفاءَ يأسي؟

    وتجترحين هدأةَ خارطاتي

    I come to you empty of every dream

    And full like the hat of the charlatans

  83. وتبتكرين نافذةً لروحي

    وتخترعين ثالثةَ الرئات

    Of the coward preaching, of songs

    Of speeches that devoured my firmness

  84. حنانَكِ أخطرُ الغرباءِ قلبي

    وأخطرُ ما بقلبك وشوشاتي

    And of the books of "Courage" and "Dictations"

    And of the juiciest lies of narrators

  85. أخافكِ أم أخافُ عليكِ منِّي؟

    هما خوفان: حَنّانٌ وعات

    Of language mummified in margins

    On a text for the riddles of grammarians!

  86. أجيئكِ فارغاً من كل حلمٍ

    وممتلئاً كقُبّعة الحُواة

    And of the Sufi cloaks, the tambourines of the shrines

    Drums of the shrine, sorcery of the pretenders!

  87. من الوعظ الجبان من الأغاني

    من الخُطب التي التهمتْ ثباتي

    Of the love that has no love in it

    Of the body prepared for sleep

  88. ومن كتب «الحماسةِ» و«الأمالي»

    ومن أشهى أكاذيبِ الرواة

    From “al-Naqab”, “al-Jaleel”, “al-Quds”, “Jaffa”

    From the “great Nile” to the “Euphrates”

  89. من اللغو المحنَّط في حواشٍ

    على متنٍ لألغاز النُّحاة!

    Farewell to beauty, to the sun of “August”

    When it smiles on the cheek of girls

  90. ومن صوف الدراويشِ التكايا

    دفوفِ الزارِ شعوذةِ الرُّقاة!

    To childhood games, to riddles

    To the morning sparrow, to my lilies

  91. من الحبّ الذي لا حبَّ فيهِ

    من الجسد المهيَّأ للسُّبات

    Farewell to crying in my mother's chest

    To Fairouz’s lucid eyes

  92. من «النَّقَب» «الجليلِ» «القدسِ» «يافا»

    من «النيل العظيمِ» إلى «الفرات»

    To the taste of orange, to a festive morning

    That glittered with colorful clothes

  93. وداعاً للجمال لشمس «آبٍ»

    إذا ابتسمتْ على خدّ البنات

    To the roof of my childhood, to my mother's chickens

    To a horizon as wide as my imagination

  94. لألعاب الطفولةِ للأحاجي

    لعصفور الصباحِ لسوسناتي

    To the teacher's ruler when it rises up

    So the skylarks burst out screaming

  95. وداعاً للبكاء بصدر أُمّي

    لفيروز العيونِ الصافيات

    To my grandmother's wisdom, to my grandfather's cough

    To the trees of towering tenderness

  96. لطعم البرتقالِ لصبح عيدٍ

    تَلألأَ بالثياب الزاهيات

    To the chatter of friendship, to cafés

    To a refined outburst of jokes

  97. لسطح طفولتي لدجاج أمّي

    لأفقٍ باتّساع تخيّلاتي

    To the sigh of “Umm Kulthum”, “to Shukri”

    To the throbbing hearts’ pearls

  98. لمقرعة المعلِّمِ حين تعلو

    فتنفجرُ العنادلُ صادحات

    To the stroll of lovers, to the wail of a flute

    To the dreams of promiscuous girls

  99. لحكمة جَدّتي لسعال جَدّي

    لأشجار الحنانِ الباسقات

    To the love nest, to tomorrow when it comes

    To thousands of wonderful promises

  100. لثرثرة الصداقةِ للمقاهي

    لقهقهةٍ مهذَّبةِ النِّكات

    I said farewell to what I bid farewell from myself

    To give birth from the ashes of wishes

  101. لآهة «أُمّ كلثومٍ» «لشوقي»

    لآلاءِ القلوبِ الخافقات

    I will suckle writing while it’s virgin

    And contrive truths, matrons

  102. لنزهة عاشقين لشجو نايٍ

    لأحلام الصبايا العاهراتِ

    And I will await the Day of Judgment calmly

    Alone under the roof of my tents!

  103. لبيت الحبِّ للغد حين يأتي

    لآلاف الوعوِد الرائعات

  104. لقد وَدّعتُ ما ودّعتُ مني

    لأولدَ من رماد الأمنيات

  105. سأفترع الكتابةَ وهي بكرٌ

    وأجترح الحقائقَ ثَيّبات

  106. وأنتظرُ القيامةَ في هدوءٍ

    وحيداً تحت سقف مُخيَّماتي!!
