1. إلى أيان أنت أخو سهاد

    وتصبح هائما في كل واد

    To which time are you, oh companion of night vigil

    And you become infatuated in every valley

  2. ودمع العين يجري بانسكاب

    ونار الشوق تضرم في الفؤاد

    And the tears are flowing profusely

    And the fire of passion is igniting in the heart

  3. فما ذاك التذكر واشتياقي

    وتيك النار إلا كالزناد

    So what is this reminiscence and my yearning

    And that fire except like the flint

  4. متى يقدح يطر شررا وإلا

    يوارى سر نار غير باد

    When will it shine, sparkling, or otherwise

    The secret of an inextinguishable fire is concealed

  5. لقد غرس الهوى بسواد قلبي

    غراما بالمحبّة والودا

    Passion has been planted in the blackness of my heart

    With love and affection

  6. وأسقاه بدمع العين سقيا

    كما تسقى الجذوية بالغوادي

    And I watered it with the tears of my eyes

    As the valleys are watered with floods

  7. فلما حان قلت له اقتطفه

    فقال مخلّد حتّى التنادي

    So when it was time I said to it, “Pluck it!”

    But it said, “Eternal, even unto the time of calling”

  8. ركبت سفينة الأشواق تجري

    على بحر المدامع للجهاد

    I rode the ship of passions sailing

    On the sea of tears for the struggle

  9. جهاد العشق ثم أبيت ليلي

    رفيق الحب والهيمان زادي

    The struggle of love, then I passed my night

    The companion of love and the stock of my supplies

  10. فحين أصبته وطمعت فيه

    جنى مني بأرماح جداد

    So when I attained it and coveted it

    It swung at me with the spears of separation

  11. متى نهلت قواديم وصدّت

    أنت أخرى مرشقة صواد

    Whenever I descended into the valley and was prevented

    You are another, an emerging huntress

  12. وحين رأيت ذاك تنيت عنه

    عناني ثم صار له انقيادي

    And when I saw that I pulled away from it

    My reigns, then it had my submission

  13. تنيت قبيل ذاك وبعد كري

    إلى مولاته لأنل مرادي

    I pulled away before that and after being mean

    To my patroness so I can attain my wish

  14. فلما أن رأيت الوصل منها

    بعيداً دونه خرّط القتاد

    So when I saw that attaining union from her

    Was distant, beyond it the camel litter was torn

  15. إلى مدح المعظم في البرايا

    تنيت لأن ذلك من رشادي

    To praise the Greatest in the wild

    I pulled away for that was my guidance

  16. فقل ما شئت من مدح وشكر

    فما دون النبوءة فيه بادي

    So say what you wish of praise and thanks

    For nothing besides prophethood in it is manifest

  17. فقل إن شئت ذو علم وعز

    وقل إن شئت منسكب الأيادي

    So say if you wish the possessor of knowledge and might

    And say if you wish the pourer of hands

  18. ومن يبغي جياداً من خيول

    فيعطيه من الخيل الجياد

    And whoever seeks steeds from horses

    He gives him from the horses, the steeds

  19. ومن خاف الأعادي حيث كانوا

    فيكفي ما يخاف من الأعادي

    And whoever fears enemies wherever they are

    Suffices what he fears from the enemies

  20. ومن عاداه دمّره بحتف

    كما فعل الاله بقوم عاد

    And whoever makes him his enemy, he destroys him suddenly

    As God did to the people of Aad

  21. ترى العافين حول الباب دأبا

    على مر الشدائد كالخراد

    You see the healthy ones habitually

    At the door in times of distress like locusts

  22. فإن زادوا يزيد جداه زيدا

    وان نقصوا فيبقي في ازدياد

    If they increase, his generosity increases fold

    And if they decrease, he remains in increase

  23. فلا سحنون شاكله بعلم

    ولا لا في الحديث أبو الزناد

    So neither Saḥnūn resembles him in knowledge

    Nor Abū al-Zinād in narration

  24. ولا الجيليّ في سرّ مصون

    ولا في القرب من رب العباد

    Nor Al-Jīlī in an impregnable secret

    Nor in nearness to the Lord of lords

  25. ولا واللّه ما سمع ابن صدق

    بمثلك في المدائن والبوادي

    By God, the son of Sidq has not heard

    Of your like in cities and lands

  26. أجل الخلق عند الله سؤلا

    وأعظم حرمة يوم التنادي

    The most eminent of people to God if asked

    And greatest in sanctity on the Day of Calling

  27. يغيث من استغاث به سريعاً

    سواء في الدنو وفي البعاد

    He helps swiftly whoso prays through him

    Alike in closeness and distance

  28. لقد شهدت لك الحيتان طرّا

    على رغم الحسود وكل ناد

    The whales have certainly witnessed for you openly

    Despite the envious and all who call

  29. وأقمار السماء وما حوتهُ

    بأنّك لن تماثل في البوادي

    And the planets of heaven and what they contain

    That you will have no parallel in the lands

  30. ومن فيها يقيسك قاس جملا

    يوافينا بجمل من رماد

    And whoever compares you measures a camel

    Bringing us camels from ashes

  31. وحاصل ذايا إنسان عيني

    بأنك في المعالي ذو انفراد

    And the upshot of my being human eye

    Is that you are uniquely supreme

  32. أتيتك بعد إفلاسي وذلي

    وضلّت بي مناهيج الفساد

    I came to you bankrupt and disgraced

    And ways of corruption made me lose my way

  33. أغثني يا عماد ومن عليه

    إذا ما لم تغث يكن اعتمادي

    Help me O pillar and bestow favor upon me

    For if you do not help, you would have been my reliance

  34. على الهادي الأمين ومن تلاه

    صلاة ما حدا بالركب حادي

    Upon the Guide, the Trustworthy, and the one after him

    Prayers as long as the riding beasts have a guide

  35. وما قال الغريم سهاد ليل

    إلى أيان أنت أخو سهاد

    And the enemy has not said Saḥād a night vigil

    To which time are you, oh companion of my night vigil
