اِستَغنِ عَن كُلِّ ذي قُربى وَذي رَحِمٍ
إِنَّ الغَنِيَّ مَن اِستَغنى عَنِ الناسِ
Need no one, however close in kinship or blood;
for the truly rich man is he who has no need of others.
وَاِلبِس عَدوَّكَ في رِفقٍ وَفي دَعَه
لِباسَ ذي إِربَةٍ لِلدَّهرِ لَبّاسِ
And wear your enemy gently and at ease,
as a resourceful man would wear him—an accomplished wearer for life.
وَلا تَغُرَنَّكَ أَضغانُ مُزَمِّلِهِ
قَد يَضرِبُ الدُبرَ الدامي بِأَحلاسِ
And do not let the rancors of his wearer deceive you:
a bleeding saddle-gall may be covered with saddlecloths.
