1. By your life, ʿAmr son of Hind was not—when he called

    for my mother to serve his mother—fortunate.

  2. Then Ibn Kulthūm rose to the sword, drawing it bare,

    then seized him by the throat from among his drinking companions.

  3. And ʿAmr dealt him a blow upon the head

    with a grooved sword of pure, gleaming steel.
