1. عَنْ أي روحٍ تُسألُ الأرواح

    عمّن تغيب أمِ الّتي تجتاحُ

    Of what spirit do spirits ask,

    Of her who is absent, or she who comes sweeping by?

  2. حيّرتَ قَلبِي فِي وِصَالكَ والنّوى

    فَالشّوقُ فِي حَاليهِمَا ذبّاحُ

    You have perplexed my heart with your union and purpose,

    Thus longing in either state slaughters me.

  3. صِلني أو اهجرني فطيرُكَ عالقٌ

    كُسِرَ الجَنَاحُ وضُيّع المفْتَاحُ

    Unite me or abandon me, for your bird is snared,

    The wing is broken and the key is lost.
