1. قد كنت يا بغداد جنَّة أُمة

    وروَاح أفئدة وعز مكان

    O Baghdad, you were once the paradise of the nation,

    The solace of hearts and the abode of glory.

  2. فُعُرفت داراً للسلام وقُبةَ الـ

    إسلام دارَ خلافة وأمان

    You were known as the home of peace and the dome of Islam,

    The seat of the Caliphate and sanctuary.

  3. يا غُرَّة الدنيا! جمعت الرافديـ

    ـن لطائفَ الإبداعِ والإتقانِ

    O jewel of the world! You brought together the two rivers

    In a confluence of creativity and excellence.

  4. وجمعت من طُرف الحياة ندّيةً

    تَغنَى وتَروي لَهفةَ الظَّمآنِ

    And you gathered from the corners of life an effusion

    That sings and sates the thirst of the thirsty.

  5. يا زهرة الدنيا وأنفاسَ الهوى

    ورفيفَ أشواق وخفقَ حَنانِ

    O flower of the world and breath of passion,

    The fluttering of yearning and the throbbing of tenderness.

  6. زَهرت علومُك في الحياة وفوَّحت

    عطرَ الورود ونفحةَ الريحانِ

    Your sciences blossomed in life and gave off

    The fragrance of roses and the scent of basil.

  7. فلكم دَفعت الى البرية أمةً

    من عبقري العلم والأفنانِ

    So you unleashed upon the desert a nation

    Of genius, knowledge, and brilliance.

  8. في كل ميدان رفعت منائراً

    ومنابراً ورفعت من بُنيانِ

    In every field you raised banners

    And pulpits, and you raised up buildings.

  9. ولكم قصمت من الضلال وخُضت من

    لُجج وأهوال منَ الحَدثانِ

    And for you the ways of misguidance were vanquished

    And dangerous pits and horrors of disasters.

  10. مهما تبدَّل فوقَ أرضك من هوى

    سيظلُّ عهدُك عروةَ الايمانِ

    No matter how desires changed upon your land,

    Your era will remain the bond of faith.

  11. دارٌ مجلّلةٌ بعزَّة أُمَّة

    كم زانها التاريخ من تيجانِ

    A house adorned with the glory of a nation,

    Glorified by history with many crowns.

  12. تاريخُ إسلام وثروةُ أُمة

    أو زهوُ آمال وعزُّ كيانِ

    The history of Islam and the wealth of a nation,

    Or the splendor of hopes and the pride of existence.

  13. ويحي! أتوك على بوارج كالقلا

    ع وزحمة الآلات والرُّكبانِ

    Alas! They came upon you in battleships like mountains

    And crowds of machinery and convoys.

  14. زَحفوا بدباباتهم! بالطائرا

    ت! بآلة جبَّارة الطُّغيانِ

    They marched with their tanks! With their planes!

    With the monstrous apparatus of tyranny.

  15. زحفوا عَليك كأنهم موجٌ من الـ

    إعصار والإظلام والطوفانِ

    They marched upon you like a tidal wave

    Of storms, darkness, and floods.

  16. بالنار! بالصاروخ يُلقي فوقها

    هولَ الجحيم ودفقة الأضغانِ

    With fire! With rockets raining down

    The horrors of hell and torrents of anguish.

  17. ورموك باللهب المدَوِّي! ويحَهم

    وصواعق مجنونة ودُخانِ

    And they bombarded you with scorching flames! Woe to them!

    And crazed lightning bolts and smoke.

  18. فكأنما ترمي السماءُ لهيبها

    والأرض تطلق غضبة البُركان

    It was as if the sky unleashed its flames

    And the earth discharged the wrath of volcanoes.

  19. كم من صبي راح بين لهيبها

    وصبية طُويت على أحزانِ

    How many children were consumed by its flames!

    And girls folded into sorrows.

  20. تتناثر الأشلاء من أطفالها

    ومن الشيوخ وطلعة الفتيانِ

    Limbs of children strewed about,

    And elders and the blossoms of youth.

  21. تتواصلُ الغاراتُ دونَ هَوادة

    قصفاً على الساحات والبنيان

    The raids continue without respite,

    Bombing the streets and buildings.

  22. تهوي العمائر بين هول دويّها

    ولهيبها وجحيمها ودُخانِ

    Edifices collapse amidst the dreadful thunder

    Of its flames, hellfire, and smoke.

  23. تنصب أهوال الصواريخ التي

    جُنّت على الساحات والكُثبانِ

    The terrors of the missiles conjured

    Against the streets and dunes.

  24. لهفي على بغدادَ وهي حرائقٌ

    شتى تواصلُ في ربُى بغدانِ

    My fervor for Baghdad, as it is engulfed

    In scattered fires persisting in the quarters of Baghdad.

  25. فإذا نظرتَ فلا تَرى أبداً سوى

    لَهَب تلظى واقتحام دخانِ

    When you look you see only blazing flames

    And the onslaught of smoke.

  26. فكأنه لم يبقِ في ساحاتها

    بشَراً ولا أثراً الى بُنيانِ

    It was as if no human nor a trace of buildings

    Remained in its squares.

  27. زعمَ الطغاةُ المجرمُون بأنهم

    حملوا إليك نوازع الإحسانِ

    The criminal tyrants claimed to have brought you

    The ethos of kindness!

  28. حُرية ونداوةً! يا ويحهُم!

    حملوا إليك فواجع النيرانِ

    Alas! They brought upon you the calamities of fires!

    They brought their greed and the fervor of gluttony

  29. حَمَلوا مطامعهم وفورة نهمة

    يُخفُونها في زُخرُف وبيانِ

    Concealed in embellished words and rhetoric.

    You remained alone with those who came to you

  30. وبقيت وحدك والذين أتَوك في

    مَدَد من الصدق الوفي الحاني

    With sincere and unwavering support.

    Then the packs of hypocrites turned away,

  31. ثم انطوت زُمر النفاق وأدبروا

    زمراً من الذؤبان والجرذانِ

    Hordes of wolves and rats.

    The siege against you was prolonged! Every one of its years

  32. طال الحصارُ عليكَ! كلُّ سنيه من

    ظُلم الطُّغاة وشدَّة الطغيانِ

    Was oppression of tyrants and severity of tyranny.

    Wondrous is your patience after their lengthy siege,

  33. عجباً لصبرك بعد طول حصارهم

    لكَ يا «عراقُ» وقسوة الحرمانِ

    O Iraq, and the cruelty of deprivation.

    They tightened their grip on you and straitened, but you endured

  34. شدُّوا! عليك وضيقوا فصبرت في

    أمل يُطلّ وعزّة من شانِ

    In prolonged hope and dignity and repute.

    The mothers see in their children

  35. فالأُمهات يَرينَ من أطفالهـ

    ـن تأوّه الأحشاءِ والأبدانِ

    The moaning of empty bowels and bodies.

    Stricken with severe illness! With no medicine

  36. صرعى من المرض الشديد! فلا دَوا

    ء ولا غذاء ضحيّة العدوانِ

    Or food, victims of aggression.

    These millions who fell as martyrs to

  37. هذي الملايين التي سقطت ضحا

    يا الظلمِ والإحصار والبُهتانِ

    Injustice, siege, and calumny.

    Wondrous is your patience, O Iraq, against their severe siege

  38. عجباً لصبرك يا «عراقُ» على شديـ

    ـد حصارهم وفواجع الخذلانِ

    And calamities of abandonment.

    How did you rise from the siege, from the wounds,

  39. أنّى نهضتَ من الحصار من الجرا

    حِ من الدمارَ وهجمة الكفرانِ؟!

    From destruction and the onslaught of disbelief?!

    They thought with the siege you would eventually

  40. ظنوا بأنك بالحصار لسوف تر

    كعُ دونهم وتميلُ للإذعانِ

    Succumb beneath them and incline to surrender.

    But you endured, you did not succumb! So they thought

  41. وصبرت لم تركع! فظنوا أنه

    لا بد من حرب عليك عوانِ

    There was no choice but to wage war against you for support.

    The siege failed! And all their hopes were dashed!

  42. فشل الحصارُ! وخاب كلُّ رجائهم!

    هبوا على غضب! على غليانِ

    They erupted in anger and fury!

    For a major crime! And bombing of locales

  43. لجريمة كبرى! وقصف مرابعٍ

    بالنارِ بالصاروخ، بالطيران

    With fire, rockets, planes.

    And with all the apparatus of destruction, every right

  44. وبكل آلات الدمار، وكل حق

    قد في الصدور ونزوة الإمعانِ

    Was violated in hearts in a frenzy of excess.

    Yet you rose from the siege with a thunderous

  45. فنهضت من بين الحصار مدوياً

    عزماً أشدّ تجول في الميدانِ

    Resolve, prowling the battlefield.

    O Baghdad! Alas! Such is our condition

  46. «بغدادُ» واأسفاه! هذا حالُنا

    لما ابتُليت! فَمن تُراهُ الجاني؟!

    Since you were afflicted! So who was the perpetrator?!

    Their features are obscured! And each claims

  47. ضاعت معالمهم! وكلٌّ يدعي

    شرفَ البطولة أو يد الإحسانِ

    The honor of heroism or the hand of benevolence.

  48. ضاعت موازينُ العدالة واختفت

    ويحي! فأين عدالة الميزانِ

    The scales of justice are lost and vanished.

    Alas! Where is the justice of the scales?

  49. لهفي على «بغدادَ» بين ديارها

    حمَمٌ تفجَّر في لظى ودخانِ

    My fervor for Baghdad among its homes

    Is a conflagration erupting in flames and smoke.

  50. بغداد لا تستسلمي وتوقدي

    شُعَل العزيمة! وثبةَ الفُرسانِ

    Baghdad, do not surrender! Ignite

    The flames of resolve and leap of steeds.

  51. وتوقَّدي لهباً يَصبُّ على العدى

    حُمَمَ الجحيم وغضبة البركانِ

    And ignite a blaze that pours upon the enemy

    The flames of hell and wrath of volcanoes.

  52. لا تيأسي بغدادُ إن طال المدى

    فالنصر عزمة صابر طعانِ

    Do not despair Baghdad though the course may be long

    For victory is the resolve of one who perseveres and attacks.

  53. والحرب جولاتٌ ليجلى عندها

    شرفُ العهود وعروة الايمانِ

    And war has rounds in which will be revealed

    The honor of covenants and the bond of faith.

  54. فثبي وخلِّي الأرض تحت جُنُودهم

    وعتادهم وقداً من النيران

    So rise up and make the earth quake beneath their soldiers

    And equipment with missiles of fire.

  55. ومن الزحوف كأنها زحفُ الجبا

    ل عليهمُ وعواصف الكثبان

    And of offensives like the advance of mountains against them,

    And storms that cast their ships of malice,

  56. وقواصف ترمي بوارج حقدهم

    وتهز من عُمُد ومن أركان

    And tempests that shake their pillars and foundations.

    That is true heroism! How majestic its loyalty,

  57. تلك البطولةُ! ما أجلّ وفاءها

    من كل وثاب على الميدانِ

    From every resolute soul on the battlefield.

    Baghdad! God's rope is the firmest resolve,

  58. بغداد! حبل الله أوثق عزمة

    فتمسَّكي! لهفي على بغدانِ

    So hold fast! My fervor for the quarters of Baghdad.

    Bolster the bonds of faith! Your victory is a sign

  59. شُدِّي عُرى الإيمان! نَصرُك آية

    لله إن أوفيت بالاحسانِ

    From God if you uphold benevolence.

    Good tidings that continue to emerge on our horizons,

  60. بُشرى تظلُّ تُطِلُّ من آفاقنا

    أمل القلوبِ وفرحة الأزمان

    The hope of hearts and joy of times.
