1. You are the Prophet Muhammad,

    a radiant, commanding noble chief,

  2. of a line of honored, noble lords,

    pure themselves and pure in birth.

  3. How excellent the stock, whose root was

    ʿAmr, the peerless, bountiful one.

  4. He crumbled the rabīka in great serving bowls,

    while life in Mecca was at its hardest.

  5. By that deed a custom was born:

    in it, khabīza is crumbled and soaked.

  6. Ours is the pilgrims’ water service;

    with its water the raisin drink is mixed.

  7. Ours, too, are the two passes and all

    that its ʿArafāt and the Sacred Mosque encompass.

  8. How could you be wronged while I yet live,

    when I am the fierce, undaunted warrior?

  9. Upon Mecca’s broad flats no one sees

    any dark, fresh-spilled blood;

  10. and your father’s sons seem to be

    lions of the den, blazing with fury.

  11. Indeed, I have always known you truthful,

    never embellishing what you say.

  12. You have always spoken what is right,

    even as a beardless child.
