1. Be patient, my dear son, for patience is wiser.

    Every living being's destiny is Shaʿūb—Death.

  2. Patience has worn thin, and the ordeal is severe,

    To ransom the beloved and the beloved's son:

  3. The radiant Prophet, of lineage illus-

    trious, and possessed of prowess, noble and highborn.

  4. If Death strikes you, the arrows come in succession;

    So some of them hit, and others miss.

  5. Every living being, even if it long enjoys life,

    Will take a share of its taste.
