عَجِبتُ لِحِلمٍ يا اِبنَ شَيبَةَ عازِبٍ
وَأَحلامِ أَقوامٍ لَدَيكَ سِخافِ
I am amazed, son of Shaybah, at the forbearance of an unmarried man,
And at the dreams of people with you being absurd.
يَقولونَ شايِع مَن أَرادَ مُحَمَّداً
بِظُلمٍ وَقُم في أَمرِهِ بِخِلافِ
They say, defame whoever intended Muhammad
With injustice, and take a stand against him in defiance.
أَضاميمُ إِمّا حاسِدٌ ذو خِيانَةٍ
وَإِمّا قَريبٌ مِنكَ غَيرُ مُصافِ
Either a treacherous envier or a disloyal relative of yours,
So do not let time control you because of him,
فَلا تَركَبَنَّ الدَهرَ مِنهُ ذِمامَةً
وَأَنتَ اِمرُؤٌ مِن خَيرِ عَبدِ مَنافِ
And you are a man from the best of slaves of Manaf.
And do not leave him as long as you live for a glorified one,
وَلا تَترُكَنهُ ما حَييتَ لِمُعظمٍ
وَكُن رَجُلاً ذا نَجدَةٍ وَعَفافِ
And be a man of help and chastity,
Who wards off enemies from a Hashemite peak.
يَذودُ العِدا عَن ذِروَةٍ هاشِمِيَّةٍ
إِلافهُم في الناسِ خَيرُ إِلافِ
For he has close kinship to you, a near relation,
And is not of an ally or client.
فَإِنَّ لَهُ قُربى لَدَيكَ قَريبَةً
وَلَيسَ بِذي حِلفٍ وَلا بِمُضافِ
Rather, he is from Hashim, of its core,
Swimming beyond the seas, sailing.
وَلَكِنَّهُ مِن هاشِمٍ ذو صَميمِها
إِلى أَبحُرٍ فَوقَ البُحورِ طَوافِ
And confront all the people about him and be for him
An advisor against enemies without being stern.
وَزاحِم جَميعَ الناسِ عَنهُ وَكُن لَهُ
وَزيراً عَلى الأَعداءِ غَيرَ مُجافِ
And if Quraysh becomes angry with him, then tell it:
“O cousins, your people are not weak.”
وَإِن غَضِبَت مِنهُ قُرَيشٌ فَقُل لها
بَني عَمِّنا ما قَومُكُم بِضِعافِ
“What is with you covering him in darkness?
What is with latent hatreds there, fears?”
وَما بالُكُم تَغشَونَ مِنهُ ظُلامَةً
وَما بالُ أَحقادٍ هُناكَ خَوافِ
“Our people do not cover people's darkness,
Nor are we with what saddened them too light.”
فَما قَومُنا بِالقَومِ يَغشَونَ ظُلمَنا
وَما نَحنُ فيما ساءَهُم بِخِفافِ
“But we are people of pacts and prohibitions
And honor at Bat’haa of Mash’ar everlasting.”
وَلَكِنَّنا أَهلُ الحَفائِظِ وَالنُهى
وَعِزٍّ بِبَطحاءِ المَشاعِرِ وافِ
