1. If Quraysh one day gathers to boast,

    then ʿAbd Manaf is its choicest stock and its very core.

  2. And if the nobles of its ʿAbd Manaf are sifted out,

    then in Hashim are its nobles and its ancient stock.

  3. And if it boasts one day, then surely Muhammad

    is the chosen one from its choicest stock, and its noble one.

  4. Quraysh rallied—its lean and its fat—

    against us, but did not prevail, and its wits went astray.

  5. And of old we would not tolerate injustice;

    whenever they turned their haughty cheeks aside, we set them straight.

  6. And we defend its protected lands on every day of battle,

    and we beat back from its stones whoever seeks to take them.

  7. Through us the withered bough revived, and only

    at our sides do its roots grow moist and flourish.

  8. They are the loftiest lords in every circumstance;

    theirs is a herd whose sires cannot be overcome.

  9. All creation submits to them in obedience,

    and, in my eyes, the earth's very skin honors them.
