When the people turned away and lost heart,
fleeing, and their eyes grew red,
he charged like a fierce and mighty lion, while
grief and alarm had grown intense.
He did not falter when their host charged,
and the lances at that moment gleamed,
and swords in their hands
clashed like death’s decree.
Then they turned away after they had hoped,
and none but God sent them fleeing.
