تَوَلّى الجودُ وَاِنقَرَضَ الكِرامُ

وَأَضحى المَجدُ لَيسَ لَهُ سَنامُ

Generosity has declined and nobility perished

Glory no longer has a pillar

فَلَيسَ يُلامُ إِمّا قالَ خَلقٌ

عَلى الدُنيا وَساكِنِها السَلامُ

So no one is to blame if the people bid

Farewell to the world and its inhabitants

فَقَدتُم خَيرَ مَن رَكِبَ المَطايا

سَقى جَدَثاً تَضَمَّنَهُ الغَمامُ

You have lost the best of those who rode steeds

Who watered a land enveloped in clouds

وَأَوحَشَتِ المَعالِمُ وَاِقشَعَرَّت

لِفَقدَتِهِ وَأَلبَسَها قَتامُ

The landmarks became desolate and shuddered

At losing him and he cloaked them in darkness

بَكاهُ الدينُ وَالدُنيا جَميعاً

وَبَكّى فَقدَهُ البَلَدُ الحَرامُ

Religion and world alike wept for him

And the Sacred City wept for his loss

بَكاهُ كُلُّ ذي عَينٍ إِلى أَن

بَكاهُ في قَرامِصِهِ الحَمامُ

Every being with eyes wept for him

Even doves in their nests wept for him

مُنينا مِن فَجيعَتِهِ بِأَمرٍ

يَشيبُ لَهُ الغُلامَةُ وَالغُلامُ

We wail over a matter so grievous

It makes young men and boys turn gray

أَتانا وَالأَنامُ عَلى ضَلالٍ

فَجَدَّ إِلى هُداهُ بِهِ الأَنامُ

He came to us while people strayed

So through him people found guidance

وَدينُ اللَهِ مَعزوزٌ أَثاماً

فَعَزَّ الدينُ وَاِجتُنِبَ الأَثامُ

God’s faith was disgraced by sins

So faith grew strong and sins shunned

وَكانَ الدينُ مُنجَزِماً عُراهُ

فَأَضحى الحَقُّ لَيسَ لَهُ اِنجِزامُ

Religion’s robes were tattered

So truth no longer had ragged robes

وَسُبلُ اللَهِ مُلبَسَةٌ ظَلاماً

فَأَسفَرَ بِالنَبِيِّ لَهُ الظَلامُ

God’s paths were cloaked in darkness

Through the Prophet, darkness lifted from them

فَشَدَّ لَنا مِنَ الإِسلامِ رُكناً

وَثيقاً لا يَكونُ لَهُ اِهتِضامُ

He established a pillar of Islam for us

An unshakable one that would not crumble

وَسَنَّ لَنا مِنَ الإِسلامَ نَهجاً

صَلاةَ الخَمسِ يَتبَعُها الصِيامُ

He laid down for us Islam’s path—

Five prayers followed by fasting

وَكَلَّفَ مَن أَطاقَ الحَجَّ قُرباً

فَزادَ لَنا عَلى الحَجَرِ الزِحامُ

He enjoined the capable to come near through Hajj

So crowds increased at the Stone

وَقالَ بِأَنَّهُ يَأتي شَفيعاً

لِمَن قَد كانَ قُبلَتُهُ اِستِلامُ

He said he would intercede

For those whose submission was meet

فَما زالَ النَبِيُّ بِنا مُقيماً

فَطابَ لَنا لِعِشرَتِهِ المُقامُ

So the Prophet did not cease to dwell among us

And dwelling in his company was sweet

فَبَصَّرَنا وَأَسمَعَنا وَكُنّا

قُبَيلُ كَأَنَّنا الإِبِلُ الهِيامُ

He gave us sight and hearing though we were

Like roaming camels, lost

نَرى أَنّا فَضَلنا الناسَ جَدّاً

وَعُزَّ بِذلِكَ الهَمَجُ الطَغامُ

We saw that we surpassed all other people by far

And the violent hordes were honored by this

فَساهَمَنا الزَمانُ عَلَيهِ كَرهاً

فَغازَت لِلزَّمانِ بِهِ السِهامُ

But time assailed him against our will

So fate’s arrows were let loose on him

وَحُمَّ لَهُ عَنِ الدُنيا اِنصِرافٌ

وَكُلٌّ سَوفَ يَصرِفُهُ الحِمامُ

He lost interest in the world

And every soul is fated to turn from it

وَما مِن مُمهَلٍ في الأَرضِ إِلّا

سَيَفجَأُ مَهلَهُ حَتفٌ زُؤامُ

There is none in the land granted respite

Before his time is cut short by death, so prepare!
