  1. لا تَلْقَ دهرك بالعِتابِ

    فعُهوده ذات انقلابِ

    Do not blame the days of your life,

    For its covenants are ever changing.

  2. والبَدْ إِذا وَثب الرَّدى

    واصبر على مَضض المُصاب

    When misfortune pounces, endure it,

    And be patient in your trials.

  3. فالدّهرُ يخدع بالسرو

    ر كمثل تلميع السَّراب

    For time tricks like a mirage,

    Deceiving like the gleam of a serpent.

  4. ما جئته مُسْترْوِحاً

    إِلاّ حصلت على اكتئاب

    Whenever I sought solace there,

    Melancholy was all I reaped.

  5. فإِذا طلبت صفاءه

    فابشُر بأنواع العذاب

    If you seek its serenity,

    Be prepared for all kinds of torment.

  6. لا تَشكُوَنَّ فما يُبا

    لي إِن شكوتَ ولا يُحابي

    Do not complain, for none care

    If you complain, you will not be answered.

  7. يا صاحبي ماذا يَضُرّ الأُسْ

    دَ من حَنَق الذِّئاب

    My friend, how does the howling of wolves

    Harm the lion in his lair?

  8. لولاكِ، غِزلانِ الفَلا

    ما هان مُرْتَكَب الصِّعاب

    Without you, gazelle of the meadow,

    The rugged mountains would not humble me.

  9. أَلِفَتْ مُنازَلَة القلو

    ب فما تَمَلُّ من الحِراب

    Your heart is accustomed to the ways of love,

    So it does not weary of passion.

  10. يدنو فيمنعه الحَيا

    فيعود مَسدول الحجاب

    He comes near but modesty prevents him,

    So he returns, veiling his desire.

  11. والبدرُ أَحسنُ ما يكو

    ن إِذا تنقَّب بالسَّحاب

    The moon is loveliest

    When robed in thin clouds.

  12. لله عيشٌ سالفٌ

    واللّهو مَوْفورُ النِّصاب

    God has granted us an easy life,

    And forbidden pastimes in plenty.

  13. وسرورنا مُستيقِظٌ

    فرِحٌ، وطرف الهمّ كاب

    Our joy is but awakened,

    Happiness, though care casts its shadows.

  14. إِذا نُقْلنا لَثْمُ الخدو

    د وشُربنا خَمْرُ الرُّضاب

    When we steal a kiss from the cheeks,

    And drink the red wine.

  15. إِذ نحن في جاه الصِّبا

    والعمرُ مجهول الحساب

    While we are in our primes,

    With youth of unknown account.

  16. فارحلْ عن الدنيا وجِـ

    ـدَّ وَدَعْ مُلاعبة التَصابي

    So leave this world and strive

    And stop toying with temptations.

  17. دَعْها فقد جاء المشيـ

    ـب بعَزْلِ سلطان الشباب

    Leave it be, for maturity has come

    To dethrone the sultanate of youth.

  18. ما اللَّهْوُ بعدَ الأربعيـ

    ـن وإِن قَدَرْت، بمُستطاب

    Revelry after forty is not seemly,

    Even if you can still indulge.

  19. بعثتْ طلائِعَها المنو

    ن إِليك مُسْرَجةَ العِراب

    For it has sent ahead its warnings

    To you, saddled for departure.
